LPA Wildflower Trip, April 25, 2006

Field Trips

After almost being blown away at the Poppy Festival over the weekend, Mother Nature decided to provide us with one and a half beautiful days to photograph the wildflowers.  The flowers and the weather are quite unpredictable, so this had to be a “short notice” field trip.

Fifteen LPA members made the trip out to 190th St W and Gaskell Road where we photographed fields of Poppies, Goldfields, and Desert Dandelion.  The area was surprisingly colorful, and photographers enjoyed getting both scenic and landscape shots.  Kay Henrickson and Fred Griggs had fun photographing a snake!

After taking in all the color along Gaskell Road, the group had lunch at the Wee Vill Market (Ave D & 185 st W), and highly recommend the burgers.

Our last stop was at the wash out near 245th St W, just South of Ave D.  The sweet scent of the four foot tall Bush Lupines filled the air.  A few bright orange Poppies were found mixed in with the Lupine, and the color combination made for some striking photographs.  Don Bennet demonstrated the use of a white tent to mimic the effect of an overcast/bright day, and to block the wind.

Everyone seemed to have a great time, and I think all were surprised at the amount of color actually found this “not so good” year.
