Fall Photography in New England

By April Bielefeldt

Few places in the United States offer more stunning photography possibilities than New England.

For the last 5 years I have been going to Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont to capture the brilliant reds, fiery oranges, and glowing yellows that paint the trees from late September thru October.

When planning a Photography Trip it is important to do a lot of research- AAA is a great place to pick up maps for the states you wish to visit and guidebooks for lodging information. After that do an internet search on travel sites such as Frommers, Fodors and Lonely Planet.

I like Lonely Planet as it allows you to purchase and download chapters of the various guidebooks you are interested in without buying the whole book. Photo sharing sites such as Flickr offer great visual examples of where to go capture images of lighthouses, covered bridges and quaint harbors.

Another source are regional magazines such as Yankee, Down East and Vermont Life all have online sites, some also have forums where you can post questions and hopefully you will get information from sources that have traveled the area.

Once you decide WHERE you wish to Photograph you can choose your dates. There are many websites devoted to predicting when the best color will be in that portion of the state. Also using the FALL FOLIAGE hotlines is helpful also.

Making a shot list is important before I even leave the house, it helps me focus on what and where to go photographing. Below are some of my favorite New England places to photograph.

Maine- nothing says Maine to me more than following the coast from South to North and stopping at a few prime lighthouses.

Portland Head Light in Portland Maine was built in 1791 making it the oldest lighthouse in Maine.

Any of the small coastal towns along the fingers of land that jut out into the ocean, Wiscasset and New Harbor have fishing boats, lobster shacks and views to the ocean make these great photographic stops. During the fall these small towns decorate with pumpkins, corn stalks and other seasonal flowers.

New Hampshire- Famous for the Kancamagus Scenic Byway which cuts across the state and the White Mountains, this scenic road follows the Swift River and offers stunning vistas of hardwood trees, waterfalls, and a covered bridge or two. I usually allow the better part of a day to cover it and stop to walk into the woods.

New Hampshire is also home to Squam Lake which was the filming location for “On Golden Pond.”

Vermont- The word means “green mountain” in French and the rolling hills, barns and two lane roads still survive in this small corner of the United States.

Last if you really want to make the most of your time join a group of photographers, a guided photo trip or workshop. Your Photo Travel Guide offers an 8 day guided photo adventure to all 3 states, your roundtrip airfare, lodging and all ground transportation are all included in the price. You will be able to focus on getting your best images and leave the rest to me.
