I have been asked a few times where to get digital printing done. This is a fair question since there are few places in this area that are equipped to provide this service. All the retailers like Costco, WalMart, the drug stores, and grocery stores fall into the category that have a service they can send slides, negatives, or digital files to, but generally speaking those services take a long time and tend to provide straight production prints. It's generally a hassle to get custom work done and way too expensive for what they provide.
King Photo, on Lancaster Blvd. can be a lot of help in sorting out who to send your work to. The guys there are very knowledgeable, can advise you on what to expect from several commercial labs, and have choices based upon their experience of many years. For example, see George for camera repairs, and technical assistance, and Stokely is a walking photography encyclopedia. It's a good place to start and provides a good learning experience. The guys there are always quick to help in any way they can and each of them brings a specialty to the store. LPA members get 10% off on Film, developing and paper.
Koko's Photo at 30th West and Ave P, in Palmdale, can make a very good conventional optical color enlargement in house, and has recently started doing digital work with a Nikon 2000 scanner, Adobe Photo Shop, and an Epson 1280 printer. His digital output is about the same as mine, however, he can do much larger prints with his darkroom equipment. He has the only slide developing lab in the valley and can generally deliver them the same day if you give him your work first thing in the morning. He's flexible, and willing to work a little longer for unusual requests like workshops. He's quite good at it, and reasonably priced. He also has a studio you can rent by the hour. If you let him know you are a member of LPA, he'll give you a discount.
If you have a little more time and want high quality custom service "Aspen Color Digital Photo Services" in Albuquerque, NM, (505) 266-0261, has the ability to make economy color prints up to 16 x 20 for $28.00, Digital prints from existing files up to 12 X 18" for $20.00, and over 12 x 18 for $10.00/sq foot. Their web site has a price list for all their services at "www.aspencolordps.com." I visited their new lab facilities in October and was impressed with their people and their products.
Last, but not least, let me tell you about a guy that has been around the digital process for many years. He operates a high tech digital Lab, and specializes in custom fine art work for serious professional photographers. Going to his web site is an education in itself. I recommend it for anyone interested in digital printing. You may recognize his name if you've ever been to the Los Angeles Photo Expo. He's always there with his exhibit, personally interfacing with his customers. He also includes a price list on his web site, that reflects the kind of care it takes to make fine art prints that please discerning customers.
