Discusson Group Notes March 5, 2010
Deborah showed off her teddy bear, cat, and kitten photos (no basket though) so I showed off my wildflower photos from last spring. I mentioned that the wildflowers are blooming in the valley. Mary said that it was too cold in Acton yet.

Bryan, a new LPA member, joined us. When asked what he likes to photograph he said he likes portraits and scenery and just about everything (like most of us). He's been photographing since 1984, starting with film. He currently has a Kodak camera but is looking to upgrade to a DSLR. We did intros around the table then I showed him my portfolio and Julia showed him Deborah's.
Bryan had a question on copyright marks on photos so we got on that subject for a while. Terri told him of a couple of web sites that sell photos and Deborah described how Deviant Art also sells photos, frames, ships, and handles the money. Deviant Art, unlike some, has a strong contingent of artists as well as photographers.

Terri passed around an article about a Canon telephoto lens-shaped thermos cup. We had a good time imagining the consternation of some unsuspecting observer watching a person pouring coffee into what looked like an expensive lens.

I described our studio to Bryan. I dubbed it "The Cave" because it's all black inside. This helps reduce unwanted reflections and gives us better control of the light.
I gave an update on the upcoming field trip to Downtown LA. I also described a local junk yard I want to go photograph. It's on Sierra Hwy at about Ave G. They have a large collection of old cars, trucks, military vehicles, and such in all sorts of conditions. About a year ago I saw a magazine with a High Dynamic Range (HDR) photo of a rusty headlamp on an old bugeye car and liked it very much. This junkyard must have hundreds of interesting photo ops. Try Googling "rusty car headlamp."

If you can, please join us each Friday evening at Denny's at the corner of Ave K and 20th West. We begin about 6:30 PM and usually go to at least 8:30 PM. You can drop by at anytime and stay for as long as you like (you don't even have to buy anything). Denny's has graciously provided us a section to ourselves and the service is great.
All photography related subjects are fair game and there's never a planned agenda. You can bring in your questions, your stories, your equipment, your photos (paper or digital), or even just yourself to sit, listen, and/or talk.
I would again like to extend a special invitation to both new members and the more expert members who would like to participate in these informal discussions. You are welcome to visit the LPA forum and leave your comments......
