On May 26, 2026, Lancaster Photography Association will have a Still Life Photography Workshop at 6:00 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Senior Center. This will be a hands-on workshop, so bring those cameras and close-up lenses (24-70 mm ideally). Kathy will give a short presentation on setting up a still life regarding composition and lighting, as well as a bit about post-processing. Then you will have the opportunity to practice your skills at arranging items for your own still life photos for about an hour and a half. Please bring items you would enjoy photographing and allowing others to photograph in pleasing arrangements. This could include interesting household items, fruits and vegetables, flowers, books, kitchen tools, vintage items, etc. Bring constant lights to help light your scene. Fabric backdrops, foam board, etc will be available to work as backdrops. We should have a great time and end up with some interesting results! See you there!
MAY 23, 2026 - OAK CREEK WILD HORSES FIELD TRIP

On May 23, 2026, Lancaster Photography Association will be hosting a field trip to see the Oak Creek Wild Horses near Tehachapi. This herd of wild horses is on private land and is only accessible with permission, so this is a great opportunity to photograph them up close. It is truly a magical experience to spend time with them. They are reasonably comfortable with people around, but you will have to sign a Release of Liability to be able to visit them. There are more than a few new babies! These horses are unbranded and free-roaming for at least 100 years. They are possible descendants of animals released by or escaped from early ranchers, miners, soldiers, or Native Americans. They bear a strong resemblance to the Morgan horse breed. WHERE: We will meet at the gate on Tehachapi-Willow Springs Road and Oak Creek Road on the left (just past Cameron Canyon Road on the right). We will meet at 9:30 to sign release forms and then enter around 10:00 or earlier. We will email a map to those who sign up. HOW MUCH?: $10.00 per person. We need to cover the cost of alfalfa that Diana will bring with her to coax the horses closer. This cost is based on 10 people attending, but more attendees is better, as it helps Diana to cover costs in caretaking this herd. BRING: Camera, wide-angle and medium telephoto lenses (24-70 and 70-200 or similar), extra battery and card, water, hat, sunscreen. Higher clearance vehicles are recommended, but the road is reasonably well-maintained. We can car pool in once we are inside the gate as need be. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SIGN UP IF YOU ARE GOING, so that we have a good head count to let Diana know. Please sign up for the field trip by clicking on the header for this article to make the comments section appear, then sign up in the Comments. You need to be a current LPA member to log in and sign up.

In line with our upcoming BIRDS COMPETITION IN MAY, Tom Jordan will be leading a field trip to Lake Casitas near Ventura on April 18, 2026. We will be leaving very early to get to the lake for morning light and bird action. Only Tom and Kathy signed up, so we will be carpooling at 4:30 a.m., not from Lowe's. If you want to meet up with us later, just call when you get to Lake Casitas Recreational Area, and we can tell you where we are. Please let us know early, so we will look for your call. We will photograph near the lake shore, and near the eagle nest. A variety of shore birds, egrets, herons, small birds, and birds of prey frequent the area, as well as various mammals. The eagles do have one hatchling. Carpooling is recommended. You will need: Camera, a long lens (the longest you have), a chair, jacket for possible cool temps, sunscreen, water and snacks, extra battery/memory card. We will stay for a few hours, and then head down into Ventura for lunch at Andria's Seafood (Yum!). PLEASE SIGN UP by commenting in the comment section below the article.
APRIL 28, 2026 - YOU BE THE JUDGE

On April 28, 2026 at 6:00 p.m., Lancaster Photography Association will be learning how to critique our own images by having a "You Be The Judge" night. We meet at the Antelope Valley Senior Center at 777 W. Jackman St., Lancaster, CA. We will start out with a short presentation about judging criteria and what judges look for in an image. Then we will look at photographs that you have sent in and elicit critiques from those of you in the audience about each image. We will look at the positives and what could be improved for each image. Learning what to look for in a competition image is a very helpful skill to have as you progress as a photographer and enter competitions, whether in LPA, S4C, SPA, PPA, or PPC. These skills also help you as you are out shooting photographs and thinking about what you want your final photo to look like, adjusting your location/lighting/settings accordingly. We will also have our normal Photosharing at the beginning of the workshop. Send up to 10 photos to Kathy at kc_newman2001@yahoo.com by 04/27/26. Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83220018761?pwd=aB5sxM517Xk44Pp2SZNqU0AoPktTXk.1
