Poppy Festival 2011

Events

The 2011 Poppy Festival was held on April 16-17.  The LPA participated for the 7th year and had a great time doing so.

The LPA Booth
We had seven members come in on Friday to help with the set up of our booth. All went very smooth and we were done within two hours. Approximately 11 members brought in framed prints, gift cards, post cards and matted prints for sale with seven of them having sales. Friends of LMAG requested some items for a raffle they were holding with proceeds going to LMAG. Some of our members donated packets of their gift cards and we were able to donate a gift basket valued at approximately $85.

Thirteen members volunteered to help man our booth over the weekend and I would like to say thank you for their help and involvement. Some of the feedback that I received was that not only did we give out many of our brochures but that we also had inquiries on hiring our members for events and portraits.

Debut of LPA Prime Desert DVD

Events

Eighteen LPA members attended the debut showing of the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve DVD at the Interpretive Center at 7pm on February 1.  This was the first half of a year long community service project by LPA members to document the flora, fauna, and activities at the preserve over a one year time span.

LPA member Chris Wilkins is a volunteer at the Preserve and saw the need for beautiful photos, so the LPA had a photo contest for images taken at the reserve from May to October.  Then David Wilkins put together a DVD of these images along with some additional record shots of the flora.  A sample of the DVD Prime Desert show was presented to the City of Lancaster at the City Council meeting on December 14, and graciously accepted.  Currently, the images can be viewed at the Interpretive Center on a very small monitor.

2011 LMAG Juried Art Exhibition

Events

The 2011 Lancaster Museum & Art Gallery Juried Art Exhibit is coming up.  The submission period is January 21 - 24 and the exhibition takes place from February 5 through March 27, 2011.

This year’s juried exhibition will differ than those of previous years. Titled "Look Here", the exhibition will turn the BLVD into a temporary museum. Through collaborations between LMAG, BLVD businesses and participating artists, the exhibition explores the idea that virtually any place can be designated a museum and recognized as aesthetically or historically valuable. Selected artworks will be publicly displayed in and around BLVD businesses, each with identifying signage and labels indicating that they are part of look here.

More information can be found in the 2011 LMAG Juried Art Exhibition Packet and at http://www.cityoflancasterca.org/Index.aspx?page=67.

Saddleback Butte 50th Anniversary Celebration

Events

Oct 30, 2010

The celebration was held on the hilltop, overlooking the beautiful Saddleback Butte State Park.  After a night of rain, clear blue skies were a welcome sight, along with the dusting of snow on the mountain tops.  If one looked up, they may have caught one of the many groups of turkey vultures migrating south.

Margaret Rhyne, President of The Poppy Reserve/Mojave Desert Interpretive Association (PR/MDIA) said the event was to be a replicate of the original event 50 years ago.  Saturday’s event included the AV Marching Band, the Boy Scouts, many special guest speakers, and a nature hike.  Just like 50 years ago, they had another photography contest.
