Field Trip to the Long Beach Aquarium

Field Trips

September 10, 2010
Led by Bill & Leslie Sutton

Six LPA members carpooled down to the Long Beach Aquarium on this beautiful Friday morning.  The car pool lane was wide open.  “Friday Light” in all the other lanes was just creeping along, so if you go… take a friend!  The aquarium crowds were non-existent.  All the kids must have been back to school.  Bill found discount coupons for all, so everyone got a break on the entry fee.

Tropico Gold Mine Redux

Field Trips

The second opportunity to visit  Tropico Mine was a big success, thanks to the 19 earlier risers that attended.  Any trip to Tropico is a good one, that is if all the elements are right.   On Saturday July 31, 2010, the weather was great, the lighting was spectacular, and the company was awesome, what more can one ask for.  Yes, there is one thing, all could have been there.

Tropico Mine Trip, June 2010

Field Trips

On Wednesday, June 16, 2010, Arliss Dawson led 6 of us bleary-eyed photographers (and one late riser) on a "step into the past" trek through Tropico Gold Mine's old buildings.  Arliss had spent the previous three weeks getting in touch with Dennis, the caretaker, and negotiating the date, time, and conditions of our trek.  Only eight were allowed this time but the possibility of future treks remains open.

LPA Field Trip (LA)

Field Trips

-- Saturday, April 17, 2010

The LA field trip was long but very enjoyable.

After all the adds and drops we ended up with five members and a guest.

The field trip was actually more like five short trips: the MetroLink down, Union Station, Art Deco Tour, Olvera Street, and the MetroLink back.

Flower Workshop, March 24 & 27

Field Trips

Twelve of us participated in the first LPA 2010 Wildflower Workshop, led by Noella Ballenger, based out of the home of Helen and Jerry Henry.

We were amazed by the Henry's Hacienda. It felt like a Bed and Breakfast...and the view of the poppy reserve was awesome! I discovered we had a "famous" castle in the AV, “Shea’s Castle” and learned online that Roy Rogers trained his horse Trigger there... and a few horror flicks were filmed there too.

Yosemite Field Trip, February 1-4 2010

Field Trips

Led by David & Chris Wilkins

Ahhhhhhhh… what a fun trip!!!

The fun started a week before, when all who signed up for the trip were invited to a potluck chili dinner at the home of Sue & Paul. David passed out a list of photo sites with the locations to be at sunrise and sunset, and shared photo tips. Sue shared a list of gear to take, which included all the usual camera stuff, plus thermals, hand warmers, snow boots, Yak Trax (shoe stabilizers for walking on ice), snow chains, and radios. We watched landscape photographer Steve Kossack’s DVD Yosemite in the Winter.

Red Rock Canyon, January 2010

Field Trips

David and Chris Wilkins arranged this field trip to Red Rock Canyon to photograph star trails on a cold dark moonless night in January. Seven of us showed up for the adventure (David/Chris Wilkins, Paul/Sue Craft, Bill/Leslie Sutton, and Anita Kratofil).

David and Chris staked out a campsite, tossed the charcoal into the fire pit, tossed a match, and got the coals all hot and glowing, and ready for all of us to toss in our “Hobo Packets” to cook our dinner. A “Hobo Packet” consists of whatever meats and veggies you want, with seasonings, all wrapped up in heavy duty aluminum foil to withstand the heat of being directly cooked upon the coals. The aroma emanating from the hobo packets was heavenly!
