Discussion Group Notes May 30, 2008

Discussion Group

I would have to say that this was one of the more interesting meetings to date.

We had most of the usual suspects plus Evie Cook.

The upcoming fair competition is getting more airtime as the event comes closer. I for one will be bringing in prints I hope to enter into the fair to get opinions and suggestions from folks. According to John entries are being accepted from now through July 12.

Terri brought up the June 20th "Celebrate Downtown Lancaster" event where part of Lancaster Blvd is closed off to traffic and the city offers music, food, arts and crafts, and more.

This discussion evolved to a recommendation to have a "Night Photography Field Trip." I volunteered to pursue this thought and will report on any progress by next week. http://www.cityoflancasterca.org/Index.aspx?page=534

Other possible locations for field trips included the motorcycle track next to the fairgrounds and the Willow Springs racetrack, both being action photography locations.

Evie brought up the upcoming LVAG "Art Walk" on June 8th. from 10 to 4. LPA members Lyle and Ann Trusty and Evie Cook as well as many more area artists will be showing. This will take place at four locations on 15th West between K and J8, West side.

It should be noted that the Lakes and Valleys Art Guild (LVAG) includes photography as an art category and is always looking for new members.

We also discussed the melding of photography and art in the sense of photoshop manipulations and mixed media.

I visited Marilyn Dalrymple's art now on display at the Palmdale Playhouse where many of her pictures have been artistically modified to wonderful effect.

I believe a number of LPA members have an interest in creating such artworks. Bonnie brought up the problem of differences between her monitor, printer, prints from Costco, electronic images entered into the LPA competition, and images sent to her photography class instructors.

We talked about calibrating monitors and setting profiles but still such differences seemed to be a fairly common problem within the group.

For myself I've found that, even though I have my own Spyder and have calibrated my monitor, I get the best results by turning down the brightness on my monitor so that what I see is what I get in my prints. Not elegant, but simple.

We meet each Friday at Bianco's Cafe at the South end of the Lancaster Market Place, behind and across the street from Movies 12.

The core times are from 7 to 8 PM but there's typically someone there from 6:30 to at least 8:30.

We'll keep the light on for you. Glenn Olson, Coordinator and Moderator oglenn@earthlink.net
