Discusson Group Notes May 1, 2009

Discussion Group

We had seven attendees (our typical number) but we wandered off-topic a little so these notes will be short. I guess I'll have to go back to cracking the whip. :-)

Vivien gave me a card from a model train buff who wants some photography done. I'll have to contact this person, get some details, and see what we can do for him. If anyone has any experience and/or interest with photographing model trains then please let me know.

Lyle led a discussion on the upcoming field trip to Willow Springs, the write-up in the LPA newsletter, and other field trip activities.

Terri showed us her flash that she bought in 2002 for her Olympus camera. She, Lyle, and Lee talked about it at length. Terri said that for $60 she can get an adaptor that replaces the entire bottom section making it suitable for a Canon.

I described a video (I think from Arley's forum collection) where the photographers used a strong flash in daylight to make the background look as if it were night. The photographers then went on to slowly decrease the flash intensity to bring in the background until the flash was more of a fill-light than the primary light source. Lyle described using flash for fill during the day.

We talked about trips with unusual sights. Jerry described his middl-east trip and seeing a man riding a donkey, talking on a cellphone. Then there was the Bedouin tent, with the TV inside. Lyle talked about the time he rented a car from Major Gaddafi in Syria.

Someone mentioned that there is a traffic circle in Palmdale at about 50th East and Palmdale Blvd. After some general conversation on the merits (and hazards) of traffic circles we decided that there was a photo opportunity there. Besides the possibility of catching an accident happening it might be fun to focus on the emotional expressions of the drivers as they try to weave in and out of the traffic. A long-exposure at night might make for another interesting shot.

If you can, please join us each Friday evening at Denny's at the corner of Ave K and 20th West. We begin at 6:30 PM and usually go to at least 8:30 PM. You can drop by at anytime and stay for as long as you like (you don't even have to buy anything).
