Discusson Group Notes July 24, 2009
On July 24 we had lucky number seven again. This was the first time for Donna and Phil had joined us.
Deborah and I brought in two homemade light tents (or light boxes), one made from old window screens and one from PVC pipes. Both were relatively easy to build, fold up small, and serve the purpose well.
Art brought in a printout from ALZO on pull-down backgrounds and gave us a reference to CFL bulbs at
http:/alzodigital.com/online_store/replacement_lamps.htm. These bulbs are daylight balanced, 100 watt equivalent for $7.95 each or four for $27.03 plus shipping. They also have 300 watt equivalents and many other lighting products.
We talked about Art's competition wins and my "Days of Wine and Roses." Then I described my shop studio that I'm setting up. Since this meeting I've received a 9' x 15' chromakey (green) backdrop and am itching to try it out. Art said that there are many sources of digital backdrops.
- Since that meeting I did a little research into digital backdrops. Googling for "digital backdrops" found many sources. Of course, you can always make your own by taking your own photographs of scenes you like (lake, mountain, sports center) or get creative with photoshop. One site described some make-your-own backdrops at http://www.digital-background.net/. A Google for "digital backdrops free" brings up a host of free stuff. Plus there are many photos on the internet that are available for free with few or no restrictions.
We talked with Donna and Phil who are returning past members (they now have time on their hands), their backgrounds in photography and cinematography, and their aspirations for future photographic work. Donna is looking for a new digital camera and had a few questions about what's currently available. She's leaving film for digital. Phil talked about his photography at his work and said that he has a camera dating back to the Civil War plus others.
Julia asked about the difference between Canon and Nikon and we answered as best we could. Bonnie explained "diopter" and other ideas to Julia. Julia asked how to get multiple images of a person into one photo and, since I wasn't sure she'd understand the explanation, I put off my answer until I could show her at home, which I did the next day.
I described my 2,200 photos of genealogy documents which I'm slowly working into a web site for my sister.
Donna asked how many members the club has and how many attend field trips. Terri gave her the current status then went on to describe our efforts at incorporation.
If you can, please join us each Friday evening at Denny's at the corner of Ave K and 20th West. We begin at 6:30 PM and usually go to at least 8:30 PM. You can drop by at anytime and stay for as long as you like (you don't even have to buy anything). Denny's has graciously provided us a section to ourselves and the service is great.
All photography related subjects are fair game and there's never a planned agenda. You can bring in your questions, your stories, your equipment, your photos (paper or digital), or even just yourself to sit, listen, and/or talk.
