Discusson Group Notes May 21, 2010

Discussion Group
The previous week there were only five of us. Art and Deborah talked table-top photography and Art suggested Deborah try a couple of things with lights and black strips to help define the edges of the glasses. We also talked about macro lenses, Craig's List, arches at the Devil's Punchbowl, and more.

This night, May 18, we had ten attendees including three newcomers and one returnee from the past. Deborah showed Art the results of her table-top experiments and they discussed those at length.

Dave described a problem with his camera locking up while trying to photograph aircraft in flight and bicycles in motion. Rodger went through some of the potential causes then detailed the differences between lens manufacturers.

Julia, as usual, showed her portfolio to the newcomers. This was followed by a few other portfolios being passed around. The one that caught Rodger's attention was Art's art, which is magnificent work. Rodger said he would like to get a better printer.

We talked about printers and inks. Terri told us about all the printers in her house, but I lost count. She says they have so many that they need a separate print server to manage them.

Terri described the Digital-Rebel forum on Yahoo to the newcomers and the weekly assignments.

Larry brought in his Nikon with a fish-eye lens and let Julia play with it (a very brave soul). Julia did OK until she found that she could get within a couple inches of people's faces with it. Then we took a poll of Nikon and Canon users and the two were evenly matched.

Terri went to Family & Friends day at Edwards to see the new F-35s.

Art told us of a photography acronym, FAST, which stands for Focus, Aperture, Shutter, Think. Someone else mentioned a couple other acronyms which I won't repeat.

Rodger said that he is learning Photoshop but he's more used to the Nikon software.

Larry described his attempt to go to the Disney Concert Hall one day but ended up in a May Day rally and spent the day doing photojournalism instead. Larry has some of his work posted online at http://photo.net/photos/Larry%20D.%20Boswell.

Rodger said that he found a lone pump house at about 92nd East and Ave K that made a great photographic subject.

Somehow we got on the subject of image numbering systems and I described mine. I rename all my photos replacing the IMG_ with the year and quarter and which camera they were taken with. Since my Canon restarts the numbers after 9,999 this prevents me from getting duplicate file names. By identifying the camera it helps me sort out who took the shot. When post processing I add an "a" to the filename for the first time I use the original, a "b" if I start over, and so on. I also add a "c" for the first time I crop an image. I also add an "i" if I resize it for the internet. A typical file for posting on the internet might look like 101a2358ac2i.jpg. This tells me that it was taken in the first quarter of 2010 with my camera, the file number is 2358, it was the first time I post processed that file, the second time I cropped it, and it was resized for the internet. This was a little cumbersome at first but I can now trace the history of each image I use and find the exact file when I go to reprint an old file.

If you can, please join us each Friday evening at Denny's at the corner of Ave K and 20th West. We begin about 6:30 PM and usually go to at least 8:30 PM. You can drop by at anytime and stay for as long as you like (you don't even have to buy anything). Denny's has graciously provided us a section to ourselves and the service is great.

All photography related subjects are fair game and there's never a planned agenda. You can bring in your questions, your stories, your equipment, your photos (paper or digital), or even just yourself to sit, listen, and/or talk.

I would again like to extend a special invitation to both new members and the more expert members who would like to participate in these informal discussions.
