Field Trip Coordination Meeting

Events

On Sunday October 9, 2011, members Sue and Paul Craft, David Wilkins, and Douglas Wade met over a great home made Lasagna dinner prepared by Teri Wade. The meeting was very informal as we sat outside on the patio, and chatted about what we expect out of field trips. Some expressed that it was important to venture out into difficult areas in hopes of capturing a great image and others expressed concern over attendance and setting up easy/local/affordable field trips.

It was determined that it is important to have both local and distance trips. We in the LPA want all members to feel welcome, and encourage you to participate in and create field trips. We also believe that new members or other members that have not been on a field trip may be a bit reserved about going. We talked about ways to help that along. First, the main purpose of the LPA is to educate and all field trips will be scheduled with that in mind and we’ll use the trip to teach something such as proper exposure or a special technique for a difficult shot. You will have help! If wanted. Each LPA field trip will include a “shot list“ and how to set them up and suggested gear like lenses, filters, and tripods. One thing that is hard to predict is the weather. We have no control over it and from time to time be disappointed by weather, but on the other hand, nature may surprise you and give you that great shot.

Upcoming LPA trips include:

  • Nov 4-7 - Yosemite in the Fall - led by Sue Craft & Bill Sutton
  • Dec 10 - Clark Courtt & Magical Christmas on the Blvd - led by Douglas Wade
  • Jan - Morro Bay & Elephant Seals at San Simeon - led by Chris & David Wilkins
  • Feb - Death Valley - led by Douglas Wade
  • Mar - Griffith Park at Night & Lights of LA - led by Douglas Wade
  • Apr 1 - Acton Rangers Gymkhana - led by Sue Craft
  • May 5 - Downtown Lancaster Walkabout - led by Douglas Wade

The goal is assist in arranging photographically appropriate outings to precede the LPA competitions, so the images taken can be entered into our competitions, and critiqued. Upcoming LPA sponsored trips were just listed, but there are more photo opportunities for you. For example, our May 2012 competition theme is “AV Events” and there have already been informal trips to photograph “Bark In the Park”, “Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix” and “Randsburg at Sunrise”. Check out the LPA Forum to find out about these short notice informal (non LPA sponsored) “Photo Ops” with “Photo Friends”. Both informal and organized events are great opportunities to get out there and photograph.

We are trying to create opportunities for both local and distant field trips (formal and informal) with a minimum of one per month, but hope to see more. For a LPA sponsored field trip, and assistance in making it educational, there is a form on the LPA website (located under the menu, “Members Only”, listed on the bottom as, “Field Trip Proposal”.

If you just want to “meet up” and have photo buddies, please post your info on the LPA Forum. It can be a simple as a member wanting to go to Apollo Park to photograph birds and wanting to toss it out and meet at a local area at a certain time, and drive together to make images.

We hope that you are encouraged and inspired to step out and attend a Field Trip, or even arrange one yourself. The LPA and all your Photo Friends will thank you.
