Sue Craft our President welcomed 63  members and 1 guest to our March “Portrait” Competition and General meeting this evening

We started our evening off with Wayne Staley announcing our judge Larry Cowles for this evenings Portrait competition. For this evening’s print’s only competition, we had 47 entries in 4 categories distributed as follows: 9 Novice, 15 Amateur, 9 Advance Amateur and 14 Masters. Mr. Cowles gave brief critiques on each print as presented this evening.  Congratulations to all who won and thank you to all who participated. A Certificate of appreciation, honorary membership and $75 travel expenses were presented to Mr. Cowles. Thank you to everyone who helped make tonight a success.

S4C – April is the last competition month until Sept. June 2nd is the Banquet. You can pay for your tickets online.

PSA – The PSA conference will be held September 16-22, in San Francisco, CA. There will be extra workshops and tours before the conference. The conference hotel will be the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront Hotel, Burlingame, CA. Room rates start at $126. We have submitted the entries for the PSA PJ third round. The following images were entered: Chain Saw Grandpa (Glenn Olson), The Wait (Larry Boswell), Working the Dog (Helen Henry), Kern River Davis (Tom Van Langenhoven), Tour de California (Sue Craft), and Up in the Air (Nan Carder).
The second round of the PSA Creative results were the following: Winning the round and receiving an Award was Day Tripping in LA (Helen Henry), getting second place in the round and an Award was Balloon Fantasy (Bill Sutton), winning an Honorable Mention was A New Moon Rising (Diana Edgel). LPA won the 2nd round, and there is a News Item on the home page of the PSA website noting the winners of the Groups.Entries for the third CPID Interclub competition, there are no results yet.Entries for the second PSA Nature competition there were no Awards or HMs.The PSA Southern California Roundup Chapter: The members that attended the PSA Southern California Roundup Chapter meeting in January, or have been attending the Chapter’s meeting were asked to submit images for the PSA Chapter Gallery to be displayed on the PSA Website.

George Glennie: LPA has entered the George Glennie Nature competition. This was the first time trying a different judging system where all entrants did the voting. The entries included the following: Alpha Bull Elk (Ed Duley), Barn Owl Take Off (Sue Liberto), Bear Attitude (Tom Van Langenhoven), Cheetahs (Don Bennett), Elephant Seal Gladiators (Chris Wilkins), Juvenile Golden Eagle (Marv Brimer), Lion (Wes Burcham), Moonbow (Diana Edgel), The Wave 2 (David Wilkins), and Yosemite Valley View in Fall (Sue Craft).

Some fun individual competitions are the following (you must be a PSA member to enter here):

Congratulations go to the following members who competed in the Coachella Valley International Exhibit: Bonnie Matthews had two acceptances including one HM, David Wilkins had three acceptances, Helen Henry had three acceptances including one HM. Wendy, Dale, and Pat Ware each had one acceptance, and Pat’s acceptance was an HM.
Bonnie Matthews has been doing well in other PSA International Exhibits. In the Ridgewood International Exhibit, she received two Nature acceptances. In the Everglades Chapter International Exhibit she received one acceptance in Nature and 2 acceptances in CPID, and in the Oklahoma International Exhibit she received 1CPID acceptance and HM, and one Nature acceptance and Award.

Helen Henry (Day Tripping in LA) and Nan Carder (BVS Hot Air Balloon) both received Honorable Mentions in the first session of the EID Creative Competition for 2012. The results have been posted as a News Item on the PSA Home Page.

S4C

Entries for the S4C Skill Level A for February, no member received an Award or Honorable Mention.  In March, Lion (Wes Burcham) received an award and Live, Love, Laugh (Pam Vick) received an HM.

For the Skill Level AA the entries are the following: In February, Cheetah on Log (Don Bennett) received an HM. In March, Gambels Quail (Tylene Trout) and Fall at Bridalveil Creek 1 (Paul Craft) both

Announcements:

Photographer’s Day at AV Poppy Reserve –March 25, 2012 – PSA & LPA Members admitted for free. Photography contest, and auction of fine art items to raise money for local state parks.  Donations needed.

Poppy Festival – Sue Craft, Tylene Trout, Douglas Wade to chair

April 21-22 – Opportunity to promote LPA, talk photography, display framed photos (and offer for sale – 20% donation of sales required).  New members encouraged to volunteer.

AV Fair –First fair mtg will be May 8th at 5:30

Southern CA Photographer’s Conference (SCPC) June 16, 2012 at AV Fairgrounds – George Lepp, Susan/Larry Cowles, Noella Ballenger, and more!

Terri Garner is the temp Newsletter editor and wants to remind the members they can submit articles and pictures to her for the newsletter by the 26th of the month. We still need a permanent editor.

Friday Night Discussion Group are the 2nd & 4th Friday night at 630pm at Denny’s at 20th W and Ave K

Saturday Monthly Breakfast is held the 3rd Sunday of Month at AM Café on Sierra Hwy.

Hard copy Model Releases available if needed only to those who participated at the Portrait Workshop.

Please don’t forget to submit images to Bonnie of the models from the Portrait Workshop so she can give each model a disk of images as a “thank you” for modeling for us. Our deadline is March 27th.

Bonnie has been taking pictures since she was a little girl, but she didn’t get into digital photography until about four years ago, just before she joined the club.

Matthews finds the club to be very beneficial to her. “The interaction with other members, being able to ask questions, the workshops and the knowledge that I take away from the club is phenomenal.”

She is very active, attending most of the workshops and field trips. She has missed only a few workshops the last few years and has attended about 70% of the field trips. The fall color trip is one she’s really looking forward to.

When asked what kind of photography she prefers, she said landscapes. She just finished a vacation trip to Oregon where she photographed lighthouses, old barns and covered bridges. “I really like old structures,” she said. She now loves portraits and has her own studio.

Matthews has a Canon 5D MKII and a variety of lenses and accessories. Her favorite lens is a 28-135mm ,70-200mm. & 100mm.

Matthews is our new secretary of the club and has made many changes – to help us grow. One improvement she hopes to make, however, is to archive the meeting notes she takes so new members can have access to them online.
