After more than 40 years as a professional photographer workshop co-director Tom Gamache’s name has become synonymous with discriminating natural and cultural landscape photography. His company, Wandering Around Outdoors (WAO), was named for his road trip adventures, often covering many thousands of miles monthly by discovering, rediscovering, and resolving his experiences into images that capture the art, the power, and the ever-changing personality of nature. His work appears in many books and magazines as well as interpretive displays at visitor centers.
Van Webster is co-director and photography educator with Tom at the WAO Photography Workshops. He has a BA in Fine Arts from Claremont McKenna College and Masters Studies in Architecture at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. Van is a past member of the Audio Engineering Society, The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, The Game Audio Network Guild, and The National Academy or Recording Arts and Sciences.
Tom and Van will present a preview of their workshops – "Art Light" and "Masters Program." on Tuesday evening April 23, 2013. The title of their presentation is “Art By Choice, Not By Chance”. They subscribe to the words of Dorothea Lange, who said, ”The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." They will present a workshop preview including examples from landscape art history. Their objective is for participants to gain a working knowledge of both technique and art as they learn how photography and art have interacted since the first photographic images were made in the 1840s. The preview will include a sampling of topics from their workshops including: Learning the Language of Landscape; The Real Challenge - 3D to 2D; What Am I Making A Picture Of?; What is the single most important consideration in landscape photography? and other critically important topics.
You’ll leave with information that will be immediately useful to you and many questions that will further spur your photographic creativity. Participants have said that the workshops have changed not only their photography … but also how they view the world around them. Here is a recent review by Channel City Camera Club in Santa Barbara:
"The presentation by Tom Gamache and Van Webster at the Channel City Camera Club Program Night on February 19, 2013 was simply brilliant. The pair of expert photographer/educators presented a unique perspective on the fine art underpinnings of landscape photography that impressed even the most accomplished members of the Club. Their joint presentation was orchestrated with precision and passion so as to keep the audience enthralled for nearly two hours.”
Join Tom and Van for a no-host dinner at Greenhouse Café in Lancaster at 4:00pm. Please note the earlier time.
