General Meeting: Sept. 17 2013

David Wilkins, our President, welcomed 51 people to our Program night featuring “Creating Powerful Images “ by Dan Holmes. Dan is past President of the Channel Islands Professional Photographers Association, a member of Professional Photographers of California, and the Professional Photographers of America. He specializes in Fine Art Nature, Events, Commercial, and Workshops.  He has traveled extensively: climbing, trekking, and photographing in Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and the USA. He has a unique ability to capture light, color, emotion, and tension in his images.  “Whether it is a landscape, a wedding, or a farm worker, it is all about light, emotion and impact.”His photographic workshops cover: creating powerful photographs, digital workflow, field workshops & photo adventure tours. He will be leading photo workshops in Alaska, Nepal, Namibia, and the western US. Dan’s work has been widely recognized with regional, national and international awards, including: California Nature & Landscape Photographer of the Year; Kodak Gallery Award; Black and White Spider International, Creative Asia, and others. He has had multiple local and regional showings, with his images displayed in public and private collections in the USA, Mexico, Holland, Chile, Brazil, and South Africa. His commercial work includes projects in agriculture, retail, music, and events. Dan’s presentation will entertain, educate, and inspire us in this journey we call life and photography.  He will take us on a humorous journey through our evolution as photographers, lead us on a visual journey through some of our most amazing places, and discuss how to create powerful imagery.

Basically, Dan went through a few different slide shows with music throughout his presentation. Each with different thought evoking images that could be discussed as a group in terms of what would make for a good image with impact, or a not so good one. He implied that in order to “take all that beautiful stuff we see, and put it into a photograph”, it would require the following: Inspiration and encouragement, following some basic rules, stopping for a moment (if you had one) to really contemplate and compose the shot, and getting to the point.

He claims photography is an “addiction” for many of us…a need…and so therefore we should create the images that tell the stories, and share them. We can use our power by the confinements of important rules: Getting close, simplifying, eliminating and disecting, and lastly, telling that story.

Dan strongly recommends the use of Polarizing and Graduated ND filters. If not shot properly the first go around with these helpful filters, you may find that your “wrongs” in post processing cannot be “righted”. Skies with or without clouds can be ever so enhanced, and glare can be fully reduced.

His preferred lens is a 16-35mm for ultra wide angle landscapes.

His parting words to us all were… “Shoot with a purpose!” Thank you Dan for your presentation!

Announcements: Carol Moss, our new Hopsitality Chair, welcomed 4 new guests, and Pat Ware brought  yummy cookies and lovely fresh fruit to enjoy at break time.
