Oak Creek Wild Horses Field Trip – 09/30/2017

On September 30, 2017, we will be having a field trip to take pictures of the Oak Creek Wild Horse herd near Tehachapi. We will be meeting at the gate of the ranch at 9:00 (Directions below). This is a herd of black horses that has inhabited this area for about 100 years. They are believed to have possibly originated from Morgan horse ranchs in the early 1900s. The horses are apparently fairly used to people, and you will have opportunities to get fairly close, so you don’t have to worry about having a long lens for this field trip. There are foals, mares and stallions with all the normal interactions that occur in herds of horses.

We will meet at the gate at 9:00 and there is an area just inside the gate that we can park and carpool approximately 5 miles on a dirt road to where the meadow is that the horses use for grazing. They recommend a higher clearance vehicle, such as an SUV or truck, rather than sedans, as the road has some rough patches due to recent rains. Please let me know if you have a vehicle that can be used to carpool to the meadow. The cost to attend is a bale of alfalfa per car, or the cost of a bale of alfalfa per car (approximately $15.00/car). There is a limit of approximately 15 attendees, so please sign up early on the website so that we can make sure everyone who would like to go has a spot. We can also determine who would like to pay and who would like to bring alfalfa

This should be a fun morning of photo opportunities!

Directions: Take Rosamond Blvd west to 90th Street (90th is the same as Tehachapi-Willow Springs Rd). Make a right on Tehachapi-Willow Springs Rd. Go 14.5 miles to Cameron Rd. DO NOT turn on Cameron. Look for the blue call box on the left side of the road and a wide dirt area. Diana Palmer hopes to be sitting there before we get there.

You need to be a current LPA member and log into this site to sign up.
