On April 26, 2022, at 6:00 p.m., we are pleased to have John Powers speak to us about creating an image from the past. How often do we take photos of historical reenactments and wish we could make them seem more realistic? Think costumes from the Civil War reenactments or the Renaissance Festival. Join us at the Antelope Valley Senior Center at 6:00 for a great time of learning!
John Powers will bring several different photos and walk everyone through the process, from capturing the moment to converting it to black and white or sepia, applying the textures, and adjusting everything along the way. The end result is to give the viewer the feeling that they are there in the moment, looking at an image from the past coming alive.
While living in Tokyo, John used Japan as his base for six years for his travel photography throughout southeast Asia, focusing on such places as India, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and, of course, Japan. Returning to the USA just over three years ago, John will continue his travel photography in Asia once the pandemic subsides. In the meantime, John has been focusing on local reenactment events, capturing reenactors in archaic tintype effect.
As for photographic highlights, he was awarded Photographer of the Year from the Professional Photographers of Hawaii (PPH) several times and from the Professional Photographers of Los Angeles County. John had his first book published just prior to the pandemic, entitled “Vietnam Today: A Photographic Tour of Its Peoples and Landscapes.” He holds the Master of Photography degree from PPA as well as the Certified Professional Photographer credentials.
