Discusson Group Notes August 28, 2009

Discussion Group

We had eleven this evening ranging from long-time participants to recent joiners and one first-timer.  This was a good mix and the conversations were lively.  Unfortunately, I ended up at one end of the table again and couldn't hear all that was said at the other end.  But those folks sure seemed to have a good time, especially when they were looking in my direction.  "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you." - Joseph Heller in Catch 22

Jim had e-mailed me earlier so I brought in my right-angle viewer http://www.shopzilla.com/canon-2882a002-angle-finder/8753745/compare to show him.  I also told him of my first Canon EOS (film) camera that I found in a yard sale for $45 in almost new condition, complete with kit lens, zoom lens, books, and bag.  I like yard sales.

Not to be out bragged Terri reminded us about her upcoming cruise on the East coast.  Then she had to rub it in by saying that they're already planning next-year's cruise.

Wayne showed us a print of a shot he took with his Hoya macro filters  www.dctrade.net/ebay/INDEX_files/close-up.jpg.  The colors around edges looked like they'd been through a prism, a problem no one else with these filters had seen.  We guessed that the problem was in his zooming all the way in, a position that is less than optimal for zoom lenses.  He said that he would try again with the zoom lens more in the middle of its range.

The fair got quite a bit of discussion time, as expected.  Folks liked the idea of Arley posting shots of the winners, though they would like to have seen the non-LPA member's photos also.  http://www.lpaphotography.org/Calendar/PastEvents/2009/AVFair09/index.html

Jim said he took his first digital photo, mostly to check out his camera.  Then we talked about different software for photography and methodologies for learning Photoshop.

Chuck had a question on focusing with an telephoto extender tube.  His camera doesn't do well at autofocus with the extender in.  I asked around the table and the consensus was that he most likely will have to go to manual focusing since not all camera/lens combinations play well with an extender.

I talked about the photos I took of the fair from the Avenue H freeway overpass.  The full description can be found on the forum including more recent photos.

Those were all the notes I could get from my end of the table, which was only about a third of the conversations.

If you can, please join us each Friday evening at Denny's at the corner of Ave K and 20th West. We begin about 6:30 PM and usually go to at least 8:30 PM. You can drop by at anytime and stay for as long as you like (you don't even have to buy anything). Denny's has graciously provided us a section to ourselves and the service is great.

All photography related subjects are fair game and there's never a planned agenda. You can bring in your questions, your stories, your equipment, your photos (paper or digital), or even just yourself to sit, listen, and/or talk.

By the way, we would like to include more photos in these write-ups so, if it's not inconvenient (and you don't mind), please bring (or send me afterward) a digital copy of what you show at the discussion group for these notes.  There are many folks who can't make it on Friday evenings who would like the visuals to go with the narrative.  Thanks.

You are welcome to visit the LPA forum and leave your comments......
