Lawrence Fealy – “Underwater Photography”
November General Meeting
Nov 17, 2009

Lions, Tigers, and Bears… Oh My! No… Gators, Groupers, and Sharks… Oh my!!! Some of Lawrence Fealy’s photos looked like photos straight out of the movie “Jaws”. The jaws so wide, the teeth so sharp, the splashing water droplets so crisp… the photo, ½ in the water and ½ above ever so sharp! The eye so in focus! They were quite impressive, to say the least.

Lawrence Fealy has been diving all around the world, and photographing life underwater with intensely colorful/beautiful fish, rare elusive underwater critters, big large scary sharks, huge delicate dancing mantra rays, colorful sponges and corals, and even above ground warriors and volcanoes. He shared some incredible photos with us, talked about his equipment setup, and stories about how he got “the shot”. He has a very artistic eye, a lot of determination, patience, and quite a bit of adventure in him!

Our group was quite intrigued and asked many questions. Lawrence answered them all. I still think he was tempting fate to get some of those shots, but he’s still with us and the photos impressive!

Almost 60 people attended the program, which included a number of guests. Most found about the LPA through the AV Fair Photography exhibit, and others through the invite in the AV Press.

Welcome new members! Our general meeting nights are rather busy, but want to give an invite to all to the more informal Friday night discussion group that meets on Friday nights at Denny’s. Novice to Pro… all welcome. If you can, please join us each Friday evening at Denny's at the corner of Ave K and 20th West. We begin about 6:30 PM and usually go to at least 8:30 PM. You can drop by at anytime and stay for as long as you like (you don't even have to buy anything). Denny's has graciously provided us a section to ourselves and the service is great.

Bonnie summarized the responses from the LPA survey (lots of positive comments, and some good suggestions as well). Surveys are available for download off the LPA homepage, or pick up at the next LPA meeting, and return to Bonnie.

Our Holiday/ Christmas program is next month. A festive Lasagna Dinner will be hosted by the LPA. We’re still looking for volunteers to bring in table centerpieces, as these will be raffled off and help support the cost of the dinner. Sign up on the LPA website.

Our Holiday Photo contest is next month too. Details are on the Holiday Program link on the home page of the LPA website. Get creative! We’re going to make it fun!!! Novice to Master… we want to see you can come up with.

We have an upcoming field trip to photograph Yosemite National Park, Feb 1-4, led by David/Chris Wilkins. Snow scenes in Yosemite... a photographer’s ultimate “high”. I think there are plans in the making to do a star trail shot, on a cold, cold dark cloudless night, in the snow. You’ve got to work for those shots with impact! Details and sign ups on the website.

Cheryl Ross, our club librarian, is accepting donations to the LPA. Photographic magazines, books, travel info, and DVD’s will all be among the collection, and available for LPA members to check out. Please bring your donations to a club meeting. A list of available items will soon be available on the LPA website.

Our workshop chairperson, John Shedrick, who has been responsible for setting up our monthly LPA workshops, is looking for a replacement. Passport denied! The LPA needs you! Not really… John we thank you greatly for all you have done for the LPA (extends far, far beyond being Workshop Chair), and wish you the best in your new adventure. We need to carry on what John has so well developed… the LPA monthly workshops. If interested in being chairman, putting on a program, or helping to put on a workshop, or suggesting workshops, please contact John, or Dave Anderson.

Next up… workshop night, November 24. We’ll be showing video tutorials on color management and possibly panoramas. March competition is “Open, but in the Panoramic Format” so you might want to start thinking about how to do this now.

Our 50/50 drawing winner for $29 was Tylene Trout. She took the money and ran! She’s going to be driving all over town, getting the best deal on all the goods for our Holiday/Christmas program, and delivering Lasagna’s to all who signed up to heat and deliver. Thank you Tylene.

Our snacks, yummy pumpkin pies, were provided by Sue Liberto. Sue is our snack chairperson, and makes sure we have munchies for the evening, and keeps our supplies stocked. Thank you Sue! We’re always looking for someone to provide snacks for the evening. You’ll be reimbursed up to $30. Please sign up on the LPA website, and give receipt to Nan Carder for reimbursement.

Thank you to all our volunteers!!! It’s a lot of work to pull off LPA events, but with help… easy, fun, and so nice to be part of such a great group of people. So thank you to all the volunteers and invisible volunteers too.

Get out there and take some Holiday/Winter Pics and share with us at the Dec Party!!!

Hope to see you all at the December 15 LPA Holiday Celebration!

(This Is a Test)

This is something I have been thinking about for a while now, video recording highlights of meetings that are informative and worth documenting. Below is a 5 min clip of some video I shot in-between shooting some of the above shots. Nothing great but worth exploring. This event was one of those meetings I wish we had got on tape. Maybe sometime in the future we can get our ducks in a row and put out a decent video. We certainly have the capability and knowledge to do this. Let me know what you think. Is it worth the effort or should we continue what we have done in the past?

If anyone is interested in producing/participating in something like this, get with me and we will put a list of equipment requirements we need for production and present it to the board.
