Discusson Group Notes June 18, 2010
Deborah, Julia, and I were out traveling much of the last month and then catching up on things last week. Hopefully I'll get back to writing up these notes each week.
This night, June 18, we had eleven attendees so it made for a lively evening. Some of us couldn't tear ourselves away until after 9 p.m. we were having so much fun. These notes cover only my half the table but the other half seemed to be enjoying themselves too. I just hope they weren't talking about us at my end of the table.
I described the Tropico field trip to those who hadn't gone and showed some photos from Arliss and myself on my laptop. My thanks to Lee for getting my write-up posted on the LPA web site so quickly. I also showed some photos of some exotic plants that are blooming in the Movies 22 parking lot.
Rodger showed off a 16x20 print of a Hawaiian coastline that his wife had taken with her Point & Shoot (P&S). Rodger was complaining that she got better photos than he did. I have the same complaint when Julia (my grandaughter) and I go out shooting.
Terri talked about Photoshop Elements 8 (PSE8) and scrapbooking. She showed us her new book, "Top 100, Simplified Tips & Tricks" for PSE8. It's a real simple step-by-step book with lots of pictures. Even I could follow that.
Deborah showed off her new prints, some that she's planning to submit to the LPA/LVAG competition.
Art showed us some prints comparing the lighting patterns of spot and flood lights so we could see how they affect his still life photos. He also showed some photos of one of his projects and described his troubles trying to keep from getting bubbles in the fried eggs. Then he said something about giving up and using scrambled eggs.
I asked Terri about her laserjet printer and she replied "which one." But we got into the differences between laserjets and officejets, capabilities, and prices. Then I mentioned that Deborah and I switched over from ethernet G to N which is much faster.
We had a lengthy discussion of what defines a photo professional and why we think a kid at the mall pushing a button that fires a stationary camera at children all day long should not be classified as a "professional photographer." Fun, but all in vain
Lee described his new Panasonic Lumix P&S with 14 MPs and face recognition mode. Deborah described a P&S she was looking at that had a smile recognition mode which won't take the picture until everyone is smiling. Someone else described one that won't take the photo until everyone has their eyes open and smiling. I said we need one that will detect inappropriate hand signs in the background. Terri said she had one of those photos and took a black marker to the print. We finished the evening laughing.
If you can, please join us each Friday evening at Denny's at the corner of Ave K and 20th West. We begin about 6:30 PM and usually go to at least 8:30 PM. You can drop by at anytime and stay for as long as you like (you don't even have to buy anything). Denny's has graciously provided us a section to ourselves and the service is great.
All photography related subjects are fair game and there's never a planned agenda. You can bring in your questions, your stories, your equipment, your photos (paper or digital), or even just yourself to sit, listen, and/or talk.
I would again like to extend a special invitation to both new members and the more expert members who would like to participate in these informal discussions.
