LPA/LVAG Fine Art Show

On July 10, 2010, the Lancaster Photography Association and the Lakes and Valleys Art Guild (LPA/LVAG) held a combined Juried Fine Art Photography Show at the LVAG Gallery in Lake Hughes.  There were fifty-three works on display depicting scenes ranging from cars to flowers, mountain streams to stars, and skyscrapers to subways.

The reception began at high noon with drinks and pot luck foods for all around.  This was an opportunity for friends and colleagues to admire each other's work and tell the stories behind each photo.

The judging was performed by Joanne Stolte, APSA, EPSA, who has judged for the LPA before.  After carefully considering the beautiful artworks Joanne settled on three award winners and two Honorable Mentions (HMs).  But before she made her announcements she gathered everyone together and elaborated her thoughts on each work.  As Fine Art works Joanne considered each piece as a whole, that is the photograph, the framing, and the matting.  Her comments covered both the artistic value and the commercial viability.  From Joanne we learned much about matching the frame and matting to the photographic subject.  We learned about which subjects might be best sold locally versus those with a broader appeal.  She even gave us some hints on those subjects that would appeal more to men versus those that women might like better.  This was an educational opportunity all by itself.

First prize was awarded to Helen Henry for her photo, titled "Vanity," of an antique vanity taken at the Tropico Gold Mine in Rosamond.  Second prize was also awarded to Helen for her photo, titled "Poppy in Back," of purple wildflowers with a soft image of poppy orange as the background.  Third prize went to Dave Wilkins for his photo titled "Old Car at Bodie" a close-up sepia of an old car with the buildings of Bodie in the background.  Lyle Trusty earned an HM for his "Fall Color on Big Rock Creek" which was a fall-color scene printed on canvas and framed in wood.  Pat Ware also earned an HM for her "Randsburg Door" showing a weathered wooden door with white-lace curtains in the window and a chain for a door latch.  All of the works on display were of high quality and well worth the short trip to see them.

Many thanks go out from the LPA and the artists to Lyle Trusty and Helen Henry for setting this up, the LVAG for hosting the show, and Dave Faust, LVAG President, for displaying the art works.  These fine works of art will be on display (and up for sale) at the LVAG Gallery in Lake Hughes through August 1.  The gallery is open weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
