Wildflower Photography Presentation, March 25, 2013

Events

On Saturday afternoon, the 25th of March, LPA member Sue Craft was the guest speaker at the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve in Lancaster. Her topic was “Wildflower Photography” and she was assisted by LPA member Tylene Trout. Using the large overhead flat screen tv that the LPA had donated to the PDWP last year, Sue showed a great variety of photos that enhanced her message. Some of the sub-topics covered included specific flowers and plants that grow at the PDWP (during years we have more rain than this year), where those flowers are located, other locations where blossoms are often found in the AV, camera lens suggestions, specific photo taking techniques, as well as book and web sites that may be of help.

Local Wildflower Resources

  • Antelope Valley Wildflower Watch by Rich Breault
  • AV Press - Wednesday’s during Wildflower Season
  • CA Poppy Preserve - (661) 724-1180
  • A Flower Watcher's Guide by Milt Stark, available at the Poppy Preserve

I appreciated Sue’s visual illustrations that compared a basic “stock” photo of flowers to a more creative picture by using such methods as:  better photo cropping, shooting from a different angle, depth of field adjustments, and the use of various macro options. Overall I thought the presentation was well organized and just the right length.  After the formal presentation to a group of 25, Sue opened the meeting for a time of questions and answers. Also Chris Wilkins, a PDWP volunteer as well as an LPA member, offered to lead a walk along the PDWP trails for interested attendees.
