Opening of 2014-2015 Competition Year!
Dear S4C Entrants:
Hope you have had a great summer and took some fabulous photos! We'll look forward to seeing them during the competition year.
We will open for entries into the October competition on September 10th, if not sooner. The deadline for entry is Saturday, October 4th at 11:59 PM (not a second later ;-)), with the judging to completed by Saturday, October 11th. Judging will be done remotely so there will be no "physical" meeting.
Changes to Competitions
Several important changes have been implemented (click here for more details):
- The definitions of Nature General and Nature Wildlife have changed significantly to reflect changes in PSA's new definition. Although the substance and intent is essentially the same, the wording has been clarified. The definitions themselves are now accompanied by a detailed list of explanations that in effect provide a useful checklist for entrants. All entrants planning to enter Nature should read both the new definitions and the explanations/checklist - this is important to avoid DQs!
One result of these changes is that human elements (made by humans!) are now allowed in S4C nature competitions provided that these elements are an integral part of the nature story. Examples of this are given in the checklist document.
The explanations are based on an excellent article by Dan Charbonnet, PSA VP of Exhibition Services, that appeared in the latest, September, 2014, issue of the PSA Journal.
- The name of the Pictorial Studio section has been changed to Pictorial Arranged to recognize that the definition may well apply to images taken outside of a formal studio setting. The definition has also been expanded to reflect this broader context. We hope this new approach will appeal to many of you who take images - such as still lifes - that are arranged by the maker regardless of the setting. Please read the new definition carefully.
- The definition of Pictorial Monochrome has been updated to reflect a visual standard for judging monochromes rather than the unattainable requirement that it contain just a single color.
- Hi Point Awards will now be based on the 12 highest scoring images submitted into a section by an entrant during the competition year, rather than totaling 14 images. This puts a little less strain on entrants to enter all 14 images to stand a chance of qualifying for a medal. It also means that no Standings Reports will be published in March or April, since this could give a false understanding of the final results.

Announcement from Stuart Lynn, President Southern California Council of Camera Clubs (S4C)

Matthews-Franke finds the club to be very beneficial to her. The interaction with other members, being able to ask questions, the workshops and the knowledge that I take away from the club is phenomenal.
She believes the meetings, workshops and field trips are very beneficial, specially to the new members. Her favorites were the Fall Color Trips; Mono Lake Trips and the workshops were she had her camera and could play along.
She love landscapes. She just finished a vacation trip to Oregon where she photographed lighthouses, old barns and covered bridges. The older the structure the better
.She also loves portraits, and shooting in her own studio.
Matthews-Franke has more than a few Canon's, a Canon 7D, a Canon 5D MKII and a few more with a variety of lenses and accessories. Her favorite lens is a 28-135mm ,70-200mm. & 100mm.
Matthews-Franke was our secretary of the club for a few years and helped made many changes to help us grow.
