Abstract Competition - July 21, 2020

Welcome to our first competition of the 2020-2021 year, Zoom style! We are having an Abstract Competition on July 21, 2020. All LPA members are eligible to participate in our 5 competitions throughout the year. You may enter 3 photographs for a $5.00 entry fee. Currently we are only accepting digital entries, because the judging will be done remotely via a Zoom meeting - see link below.

Deadline for Entries: July 14, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. Click here to enter.

The definition of Abstract: Images in which the presentation of shape or form is the objective of the photograph. Abstract is often determined by not knowing what an object is, at least right away. For example, lines and shapes might be what you first saw, but then after studying the image, you notice that those lines and shapes are the outside of a building. If you saw it as a building first, without much thought, it may be better suited for the Structures Class.

Both Color and B&W images are acceptable.

Before entering the competition, please prepare your images correctly.

  • Set JPEG compression to ‘high’ or ‘maximum’.
  • Set the maximum dimension in pixels to 1400 wide by 1280 high for best viewing on the club's projector.
  • Set color to sRGB for best viewing on a computer screen.

The LPA Competition guidelines are available on our website at: https://www.lpaphotography.org/page.php/20140711235021707 and https://www.lpaphotography.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=competitions:rules_2015

Our judge will be Noella Ballenger. She gave a workshop to LPA about Macro/Flower Photography in 2016 and it was very impactful.

To “see”, to create, to photograph, to share the treasures of our natural world, to share my vision with you... that is my goal. To have my photography inspire you to “see”… that is my joy!

A professional nature and wildlife photographer and writer, Noella Ballenger’s experience has included photographing some of the world’s most pristine and spectacular locations. Traveling extensively, she has searched for pockets of beauty throughout the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Africa, Europe and the South Pacific.

Noella has lectured throughout the United States and New Zealand. She celebrates her 30th year of teaching photography and her 33rd year as a member of the American Society of Media Photographers. Her work has been published in Gardens & Landscapes, Natural History, Petersen’s Photographic, Zoo View, Lapidary Journal, Westways, California Highways, True West and many other magazines. In addition, her work has been selected for inclusion in the Smithsonian Guide to Historic America: Pacific Coast States, American Sampler, Focus on New Zealand (New Zealand); Great Mysteries: Ghosts (England); Death Trap: The Story of the La Brea Tar Pits, Ghost Towns of the American West, The Audubon Guides, Simple Prayers and Blessings, La Purisima, Erosion, The Pueblo, Encyclopedia of Native Americans and many other books.

You now have the opportunity to become a better photographer & learn from Noella through her online photography classes. Her website is located at www.noellaballenger.com.
