I don't know if I'm lucky, persistent, or just plain cheap.

Last June Julia and I attended the survival conference, Dirtime '08, in the High Sierra's. I took my camera along, of course, and took numerous pictures. Afterward I sent copies to the head Survival Guru and to the instructor on edible plants, who is also the editor of Wilderness Way Magazine. Well, the latest magazine came out and four of the pictures are mine. My only credit was my mispelled first name at the beginning of the article, but I'm jazzed.

Previously I got two pictures in the AV Press by a writer doing an article on archery. The Press photog didn't show up and I had my camera in the back of the car so I volunteered. That time my name was correctly cited under each picture.

I'd like to hear about anyone else who has been published and how they managed it.

Glenn,
Pictures I have taken of my husbands "catch of the week" was published too.
Last time though the guy gave me 3/4 of a page just of pictures of my husbands dorado and an article on my family giving me full credit for the pics.
Does that count?

What kind of publication is this? A sport fishing magazine? Did you contact them, meet them by accident, etc?

Also, do I interpret "dorado" correctly as a "Cadillac El Dorado?"

On my pictures in the Wilderness Way magazine I had met the editor about two years ago, he offers weekend classes in what he describes as self reliance. The one we attended was a hike up a canyon behind JPL, Pasadena, where he showed us edible and poisonous plants, a primitive shelter, weaving plant fibers, and starting a fire by rubbing sticks together. I gave him the pictures with the hope that he would put at least one in his magazine. In both cases I offered my services without being asked.

Arney, I gave the editor a copy of all my pictures and it looked like he may have touched them up a little. One of these days I'll take the time figure out how to upload and post those four.

Glenn & Sharna,

Of course those count as getting published!

I’d like to see the photos/pages.

Two of my photos of a stud horse were published in the Pacific Coast Journal. I charged my customer for the service of photographing the horse, and then gave them a disc full of photos. They turned the photos in to the Pacific Coast Journal, and paid $800 to have their stud horse published on the front cover, along with a full inside page too. The journal chose which photos to use. The magazine editor/graphic designer created the pages, with my photos. It was exciting to see my photo on the front of a magazine, and yes, they gave me credit for the photos.

I’ll upload the pages as soon as I figure out how.

Arley… how do we do that again?

I'm going to assume you mean pictures.

Just upload your picture somewhere on the web.
See....

You can also upload to your own website and reference your picture from there. Just create a temp folder and upload your pictures. Then just look at the properties of the file in its new location. It will show you the new url to reference here. Just make sure you have sized them to fit the forum window.

Very Awesome Sue.

To answer Glenns question about my publication. It was the Valley Press. Dorado is a type of fish he caught off the coast of Mexico. The publisher used 4 or 5 of my pictures in his publication. Like I said I had 3/4 of a page on just my husbands fishing trip and my pictures. I was very proud.

I'll show a picture when I scan the page. I have been kind of out of the loop since my back surgery a couple weeks ago. *pain medication is my friend today* Frown

Thanks all.
