Numba One: What say we give our contact guy - Otto? - at Willow Springs a Certificate of Appreciation for letting us LPA folk into W-S free of charge? I think he'd like that we recognize and respect his generosity.

Numba Two: When I'm out at Willow Springs, people ask me what photo company I belong to. I tell them a club, LPA, not a company. Why not get LPA T-shirts made up that we can wear when we mob a place like Willow Springs so non-camera cannon fodder know what we're about before they ask? Wear 'em on field trips, gala socials and such as PR so we might add a new member or two along the way while also being informative.

#1 - Certificate of Appreciation ... very good idea

#2 - LPA Tshirt - another good idea. We had a LPA Logo Contest a few years back, and think Duane Whitaker's entry was the winner. I'm sure we could hunt down the logo/file. I have aT-Shirt to show. There was a logo on the front and large one on the back. Very nice. The logo was available at the t-shirt place (no longer there) at the AV Mall and anyone could go get a shirt made up.

Maybe we can check out AV Trophy or is it Lancaster Trophy on 10th West? I remember the T-Shirt place. Decent store. At a kiosk near the food court in the mall is a cart that will make up t-shirts but they are EXPENSIVE and not an option in my opinion. There is another trophy store in Palmdale just off of Rancho Vista about a block west of Sierra Highway and another block south of Rancho located in a small industrial park. Both places make up t-shirts for local teams and such.

I can run point on this if you all want. I've been there, done that with both places before deciding to have another place make up my PDWP Wildlife Monitor shirts (too few made up at one time to make it affordable thorugh trophy shops). All I need is the design to show them, an aproximate total number and we go from there.

If we like this idea, we need to take it before the LPA board so they can decide if the club can afford it. Again, I'm more than happy to present the idea to the board and run with it. This is easy stuff.

Don,

Both are excellent ideas.

After the first trips to WS I tried to catch Jim Hutchings, the guy I had talked to, but missed him so I didn't get a chance to thank him. If you want we can both go in and see what we can do for them in appreciation, maybe printing up some photos, giving them LPA t-shirts?

I'll buy two adult sized t-shirts and a kid sized, if they're available.

Glenn & other members:

Let me throw out a few thoughts........

That we get in for free at W-S and save ourselves ten bucks to top of trying to finance families, camera addictions, field trips and other assorted photography affairs, I'd personally like to keep that going. Not only am I hoping that we can continue our free gate pass liason within W-S, I'd like to see LPA hold in-field workshops at Willow as it goes to Action or Sports mode, better use of shutter priority, manual dexterity using one's camera vs rapid and multiple target aquisition, Sports-Action venue safety while still getting those dramatic shots, etc.

A Certificate of Appreciation from LPA would be a nice start. Taking and processing pictures for Willow?

Let's start with what they have now. Go into their main office and cafe. What do you see but old, nostalgia black and whites that date back to the days when W-S first opened their doors to the racing world. Could they benefit by our taking current, up to date shots of what they do relative to the different types of racing they support - KART, Modified, Bike and so on? After we take some decent shots, let the photog gurus within LPA decide which shots we should go with, then process and present them to the W-S go-to people who allow us free entry.

Couple this with new, spiffy LPA T-shirts. I wouldn't give W-S staff any. Let's face it, their gig is racing. Before long, those LPA shirts would be used to clean their cars or wipe up oil spills. They're gearheads, not camera buffs. However, once we make a certificate and maybe a photo presentation to W-S, their track announcer just might give a shout out to LPA as they often do to companies they deal with or who show support for the racing world. If we should just happen to be there wearing our club shirts, why not pander to "free" PR? And, this will also help when it comes to track personnel-LPA member recognition. The more we're out there, wearing our new, spiffy T-shirts, the easier it will be for all concerned to better recognize each other and why we're within a particular area with our cameras.

Another angle........

Hordes of photog companies vie for exclusive photo rights for the different events held at W-S. Those shots go outside of W-S as so those companies, who hold the photo rights, can sell them to racers and such. However, no one that I know of is doing anything relative to W-S as a company. Let's support W-S through our camera lens by taking up to date shots and presenting a half dozen or so to them. That special type of support goes well beyond what competing photog companies are doing. We will do it because we get in for free. Those companies will do it for a price that will certainly outweigh the simple cost of a free gate pass.

Here's the logo that members voted on a few years ago. Larger version attached.

I printed out the design - TY Arley.

I'm wondering, might there be a place down below we can contact to make our club t-shirts on an "as needed" basis similar to what the T-Shirt Place was able to do? From an economics side, that seems best as the club doesn't have to obligate itself to 100+ t-shirts that we would have to store, manage and shell out cash for. Instead, if someone wants such a shirt, give that company a call or e-mail.

Re #1 Certificate of Appreciation – I’d be willing to make that up, as I already do for out of town guests/ non LPA members who do programs, workshops, etc for us. I’m pretty sure the board would approve that, as that is such a generous offer from W.S. Raceway to allow us to get in there and practice our action photography and a very nice “Thank You” to Willow Springs Raceway. Thank you to Glen for setting up a mini field trip based on interest through the Friday night group, and Don for a “short notice” invite. Ideally, I’d like to see an official field trip, advertised at least a month ahead of time (but am still thankful for short notice trips, as I know how busy life can get and how scary it can be for a newbie to “lead a trip”. I’ve been there! If we know ahead of time that you’ve got a hot spot and want to share with photo friends, with your help/ request, we can arrange to have an advanced amateur / master photographer there to share pointers with the group. Not all members know how to check the forum but more are finally getting used to downloading the newsletter. Either Don/ Glen, please attend the next board meeting, as I will have a Certificate of Appreciation ready to be be signed by one/two of your board members, or trip leader.

Re #2 – LPA T-Shirt – Don… thank you for your invite to “run” with the idea. You seem to know how to get T-shirts done, and I know there would be an interest. We already have a logo, which I think we should stick with, since it’s on our newsletter, and any LPA letterhead, and we already had a contest, with many members ideas, and Duane Whitaker had the “winner”. Why reinvent the shirt… let’s get on with providing a LPA Members an opportunity to purchase a LPA T-Shirt, which was very well done, pulls us all together, and devote more of our time to improving our photography skills. I welcome you/ Glen volunteering to see what sort of a deal we could get to get shirts done. I think it should be handled the same way we do for Lyle getting club members name tags… sign up and for t-shirts, pay in advance and when there are enough sign ups, place an order. How about you two do some research and present your findings at the next board meeting. I think you’ll have a lot of support. While I liked the
“as needed” way we dealt with the T-shirt place, felt like most put a trip to the mall out of mind, and not as many participated. Lyle is having great success with getting new memers name tags. LPA T-Shirt purchases need to be made easy for club members. We don’t want to the club, or any one particular member to manage an inventory or shell out extra cash, that is why I’m suggesting a sign up sheet and collecting money ahead of time for shirts, once you/Glen find out the best price.

Re #3 – Donating photos as a Thank You to WS Raceway… great idea!!! All ideas were sort of overwhelming me, but all very good. You’re thinking way ahead of me

Tomorrow (Monday), I'll hit the streets and start digging up info for the board meeting. They're held on the second Tuesday of the month?

For pure ease, we need to work from the center out. No sence going to companies down below just yet until we are forced to go that far. I know of a small shop in the middle of Lancaster that's easy to reach and the prices aren't bad. I haven't had them do any silkscreen or some of the more trick stuff they do now days but if they know ahead of time that the order may hover around 30+ on a walk-in basis, we might get away cheap.

I have already done some checking online and companies want a large order up front. Piece meal won't do for them and this will drive up the costs on our end.

All said, there are plenty of places available. Bottom line is cost.

Hi Don - you must have stepped out of the room Friday night when Lyle said that he'd help with an action photography workshop at Willow Springs Smile Of course, he was looking at me when he volunteered, but doesn't matter who leads it. Big Grin

So be sure to give Lyle a call, he volunteered to assist Smile

I'm not looking to lead a workshop being one of the new guys and still a competition novice. Having taken a little over 1,000 pictures at Willow Springs, I'm just starting to get the hang of sports & action shots. That still leaves a lot to the photog imagination. However, when I run into Lyle again, I'll get him, me and Glenn together for a photo pow wow. Glenn started the Willow Springs gig and since he is the one with the contact out there, that would sort of centralize this thing so we can all keep our wheels on the track, so to speak, as this idea plays itself out. There again, I'm looking at Willow Springs as just one of many possible venues for a sports & action workshop.

Hi, I was wondering, at the meeting last month I think I saw a couple of people with LPA t-shirts on. ( not purple )
I was wondering where they had them made ? Since the artwork is already done at the place that made them I would like to get one made also.
I think it was John and someone else but I cannot remember.
thanks

Yes. Both myself and Duane Whittaker were wearing LPA logo shirts.
We had them made at the t-shirt place in the mall, which is no longer in business.
I think they still have a store in Valencia.
What I liked about them was that you could bring your own shirts in, as long as they were part cotton.
I prefer the polo style shirts with a pocket.

It would be great if we could find another similar business in the valley.
