Recent events have shown that there is increasing pressure within, at least parts of, the LPA to limit the number and types of photos shown on the various sections of the LPA web site. The LPA web site does include a Gallery but it's difficult to use and generally used as a showcase rather than a site for sharing less than professional-class photos. And even if the board wanted to support expanding the web site into photo sharing it might be difficult to do and unnecessarily duplicative of what's already available commercially.
Fortunately there are several companies that have been set up to provide photo sharing. Many of these have limited, but generous, packages of services that are free and would serve the purpose of sharing our photos. Well planned use of one of these as a supplement to the LPA web site could reduce the level of effort required by our webmasters, newsletter editor, and members. I can only speculate but it may even be a good replacement for our current gallery.
I have no experience with any of these but I came across a web site that compares ten of them. This web site lists Photobucket as their number one and their reasoning seems compelling. http://photo-sharing-services-review.toptenreviews.com/
Here is a good opportunity for the club to consider this option and discuss how it might be beneficial to the club as a whole. Even if it doesn't appear to a good application for the club in general it might be good for those of us who would like to share more of our photos.
So far you're the only one to respond so, if I may, I'd like to pick your brain on this. I have no personal knowledge of any of these sites and no preferences. In the comparison I linked to Flikr was listed as second, yet Flikr is the one I've heard about the most. Did you have any special reason why you chose that one? Do you think that it would be suitable for group sharing by the club members?
Lee, as the new administrator, has plans for updating the Gallery with a soft target date of July. This update should make it much more user friendly and give it a number of features common to some of the popular photo sharing sites.
Once it has been updated club members may be able to do all the sharing they like. If not then the other sites will still be there.
I picked it back in 2006 when it was a great example of Web 2.0 technologies. I was disappointed that it was purchased by Yahoo!, which i believe would screw it up.
Since they are the largest, that helps. As example, I like that I can get apps for my phone. Lightroom has a feature to publish directly to Flickr. My blogs have connectors directly to the site, so I can reference a photo instead of upload a photo into my blog. And yes, I think it would be the best for the group's website to be linked in to.
The interface is a little odd for me, but I keep trying to learn it. I even purchased a book to learn more about Flickr.
Overall, it is a great site, but other sites, like photobucket, is good. My youngest daughter has used that one.
I guess there have been some changes to Facebook regarding privacy. Here is a link to Leo Laporte where he talked about this issue both on Saturday & Sunday. I have been using it for photo sharing only & will probably just delete it once our gallery is set up.
I listen to Leo, Gina and Jeff on TWIG (This Week in Google). Leo did mention that he deleted one of his accounts. But others stated some arguments, and he mentioned he will reinstate it. I believe he did not for privacy, he is a very public figure, but to send a message to Facebook about not taking advantage of their userbase.
Privacy is an issue, I do not say anything or post anything that I would not say in a crowd.
Thanks for the reply. I am new to it & am just using for photo sharing - nothing personal. I was glad to see the LPA on there now. I've communicated with more members thru it in the last 2 wks. You and Lee are doing a great job! Cheryl Ross
thanks... I hope I did not come over as being irritated or any thing bad. I am use to writing technical, often with no emotions, so my writing style is "just the facts, ma'am". (grin).
