FIELD TRIP TO OAK CREEK WILD HORSES - 04/13/24 changed to 04/19/24
NOTE: WE ARE RESCHEDULING DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER FORECAST.
THE NEW DATE IS FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2024 at 10:100 a.m.
On April 13, 2024, LPA will be going on a field trip to see the Oak Creek wild horses near Tehachapi.
This herd of wild horses has been observed in the Tehachapi Mountains for at least 100 years. The herd size varies as they roam throughout the meadows of Oak Creek Canyon. These horses are unbranded and free-roaming, but are familiar with people. The consensus is they may possibly be descendants of animals released by or escaped from early ranchers, miners, soldiers, or Native Americans. They do, however, have a strong resemblance to the Morgan horse breed.
We will meet at the gate on Tehachapi-Willow Springs Road and Oak Creek Road on left (just past Cameron Canyon Road on right). We recommend getting there at 10:00 a.m., because we will be entering the locked gate at 10:30 a.m. Everyone will be required to sign a liability release at the meeting point.
We will need a good head count ahead of time, so that we know how much hay we will need to order. We need to supply 2 bales of hay per vehicle. The cost will be between $15-20 per person (firm amount TBD). I am expecting 2-3 vehicles (4/car) worth of members to attend. If you have a higher clearance vehicle and would be willing to drive into the canyon, please include that in your sign-up comment.
