The Moorpark Rotary Club presents the largest and grandest Civil War event in Southern California and the largest battle reenactment West of the Mississippi. Chris and I went last year and had a grand time. There are two battles scheduled for Sunday the 10th of November. The re-enactors set up a Union camp and a Confederate camp. The camps are set up to reflect the period and are good opportunities for individual portraits of the re-enactors. An artillery battalion had a cannon duel, with all the smoke and fire. Ground charges add to the realism.

The event opens at 10AM with battles at 12 and 2:30. The location is the Underwood farms in Moorpark. There is easy access from the 118 Freeway and the 23 in Moorpark. Travel time is about 1½ hours from Lancaster. There is plenty of parking. The link to the main information page is http://www.civilwaralliance.com/CWA/Moorpark1.html. Tickets can be purchased in advance and the direct link is http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/SitePages/SitePage.aspx?accountid=2188&pid=68402. Navigating from the main information page to the ticket purchase page does not work very well or easily.
We plan on arriving very close to the opening time. This will give us some time to explore the camps before the first battle. Plan on meeting at 12 noon for a group shot at the bleachers near the Confederate camp.
There is definitely a better view of the battle from the bleachers so consider buying a ticket to the bleachers. There is space between the bleacher sections to stand, but it is first come first served.
As far as camera equipment goes, a medium zoom, such as 24-70, is useful for shots of the camps and re-enactors. For the battle I think a medium telephoto, such as 70-200, is better. Flash can be useful as fill flash for some portrait shots.
Last year was a sunny day, so bring sunscreen. There will be concession area where food and drink will be available. Alternatively picnics can be brought and consumed in/near the parking area.
