It was nice to hear Jim Cooluris compliment the club on the quality of the pictures on our Photo Gallery. At the same time I think we might be shortchanging our less experienced members by having only one such gallery.

Amateur/novice photographers are faced with a dilemma. If they want to share their photos with other club members they can post their lesser quality photos, which will look out of place and may draw scorn from some of the professionals, they can post them elsewhere but that detracts from the value of being a member, or they can just not post them and they can feel left out. I've even heard it said at one of the meetings that we should post only the best so that the club looks good.

I think that we should have an amateur/novice gallery and encourage people to post their less than glorious pictures so that they can discuss them with other members and learn from their mistakes.

Thoughts?

I dont agree with the "scorn" part.

You can certainly post pictures here on the forum for critiquing or whatever. If there is enough interest, I can create another section in here just for that purpose but there is nothing stopping you now from displaying them. I had mentioned this before but not a lot of people chimed in.

Put your picture up and tell us a story. We all like to here stories. The pictures dont have to be good, just hold our attention. A good story will trump a bad picture.

I would also encourage members to register in the gallery. At present there are only 5 members registered and 4 who upload pictures. The more that upload, the more diverse and varied the pictures become.

Also, I'll ask again. If anyone would like to display their pictures on the main page of the website just send it to me email. If you don't send it, it wont get posted.

The LPA has a member at large (Dean Webb) who attends the Board Meeting. If there are any issues or suggestions and a member can't attend the meeting, they should contact Dean so he can discuss them with the appropriate party.

And finally.

Do not be afraid to show your work!!!
There is always going to be someone better than you are no matter how good you get. There is only room for 1 at the top and we all have one hell of a long way to go before we even get close to that spot. "Hell freezes over" comes to mind.

Arley,

I think I missed the memo. I had heard rumors that there were problems switching over from the old web host to the new one but no real details. Since there are now only four members who've uploaded I take it all the photos we had uploaded before are gone and that we need to re-upload them if we want them displayed?

You must have......

If you had uploaded to the gallery on the previous server, I still have them on a backup but yes, you will need to log in and reuploaded them. This was anounced at one of our general meetings and on the website.

I might add that it is general forum etiquette that readers do not critique pictures unless the poster asks for it. Complements are fine. Evil

As a new LPA member, I have many questions. This forum topic plays into such an area of concern - where do I post my novice pictures so that other members can critique them? I'm not adverse at all with the concept of having my pictures critiqued. It's a path to learning. I can take those same critiques and opinions into the field and refer to once I hit the "ON" button of my D80.
