Our judge for July will be Joanne Stolte, APSA, EPSA, here are some helpful hints on what she will be looking for.
Items a judge considers in providing critical analysis:
* Composition
* Line, eye movement
* Lighting
* Focus
* Exposure
* Dimension, perspective
* Tonal range
* Color
* Impact
* Image balance, comfort in frame
* Distracting elements
Joanne website can be viewed at http://www.pbase.com/joannestolte
Thanks

I was looking at your competiton information on flowers for next month. I was wondering will this be a nature theme only? Example-- no pictures from the flower workshop last year.

Thanks--

First, thanks to Helen for taking the competition chair position.

I am a little confused on the upcoming flower competition. The category seems to be following the fair classification, flowers, number 8, but applying the S4C rules for nature. The fair rules are a little different than S4C. If we are following the fair rules, there is nothing that I found in the rules that restricts flowers, other than it has to be a flower. I don't think the reality based rules apply to the fair as they do at S4C.

So if the Fair rules apply, one could use workshop pictures from last year as well as this year's workshop. I think I remember that Nan did quite well last year at the fair with a workshop picture.

It makes more sense to not be restricted to reality based rules with flowers for several reasons. A lot of flower pictures are taken with artificial light, which one has to be careful with under reality rules. Lightpainted flowers would probably be disqualified. A large proportion of flowers are man-grown in pots and containers. Seems like the zoo picture thing in wildlife for S4C. Flower pictures are taken in arboretums and preserves, greenhouses, planters, backyards, etc. Does this count as reality based?

Which ever way it goes, the rules need to be communicated to the membership ASAP. Remember the problem with creative?

Hi everyone, the reality based sentences will not apply to our flower competition. Those sentences that are in the rules are being moved to the bottom of the page. They will only apply to certain classes, Nature, Travel, and Photojournalism.
Hope this clarifies it for everyone.
Thanks

It may be time to redefine the rules for the competiton, it appears that alot of members are unsure of the rules..and therefore are reluctant to enter photos. Why doesnt the LPA make their own rules, is there a reason we follow the fair or s4c..the categories need to be more specific..It would be nice to have a monthly showing of photos...maybe not so much a competition, but more like a monthly challenge...each month put out a challenge..and then the following month see what people come up with..I would like to see a separate black and white category..when we had the close up comp..alot of people were unsure if it mean macro or what..a separate macro category i think would be great...just a thought.. I agree with Sharon. I think our themes are getting tired. By using the Av Fair, S4C themes over and over..it makes it easy to "recycle" photos from previous competions instead of challenging members to shoot new photos. I googled "Photography Club Competition Themes" and found a few ideas for themes
Emotion, Stones and Pebbles,Out of Place,Curves,Opposites, Light........
Maybe the winner of the competion can pick the next month's theme? Just some ideas I got from other clubs.. Big Grin
OR We could have several themes in a "hat" and have one of the blue ribbon winners pick one for the next competition

Maybe we can vote at the next meeting , and see what the members say...or the board I guess would have the final say so..Sue that is a great idea, have the persons who win 1st place decide the next competition..I think if the catagory is narrowed down some, we will have more of a variety, ..Still life on it's own would generate an interesting outcome..Youre right about the same photos being re-entered over and over, probably for the same reason..people arent clear on what their suppose to do..another thing I would like to see, and this is more for the novice people..is that we have a competition with two seperate judges..have one judge , look at our pictures, listen to his analog..and then have another judge come later and judge the same photos and see what the difference is between the two..that way people see that every judge has his own opinion,, doesnt matter how much experience he or she has.. the reason I bring this up, is that I am a novice shooter..for the longest time, I wouldnt enter my photos for fear I would hear the snickers behind me during the judging, I was intimidated by them until I started seeing the same photos entered in the competition and how different each judge viewed them..So i have started to enter on a regular basis. It seems that there are not alot of novice shooters in our club, because I havent seen alot of novice entries. or they are afraid to enter, like i was. Hopefully by making the categories a little easier to understand more people will participate.

Dear Members,
I hope that this helps clarify the information that I sent out previously.
The note:

Note: Reality based Classes of Nature, Travel, and Photojournalism:
No elements may be moved, cloned, added, deleted, rearranged, or combined. No manipulation or modification is permitted except resizing, cropping, selective lightening or darkening, and restoration of original color of the scene. No special effect filters can be applied. Any sharpening must appear natural.

Only applies to Reality based Classes of Nature, Travel, and Photojournalism: it does not state Flowers. The note only follows the description for information only. The note has been moved to the bottom of the rules to help with clarification. Sorry for the confusion.

Our next competition theme is:
#8. FLOWERS - Single or multiple blossoms of one or more plants, excluding Desert Wildflowers.
Thanks
Helen
