Another successful night. This time five of us gathered at Rod Winfield's Custom Shop on Sierra Hwy between Rosamond and Mojave. These folks specialize in late '40s, early 50's Fords but work on a lot of other cars. They are mostly a "chop" (lower the roof) shop but can do a wide range of customization on old cars. We started arriving about 7:40 p.m. to take some daylight shots, talk to the folks, and set up lights. We used two cars primarily but wandered around with flashlights and took a few other shots.

At the beginning of the Junk Yard Lights activity I thought about what the Bug-Eyed Sprite might would look like with night lights.



and can now compare this with a reality shot.

I happened to be looking up the address for Winfield's Rod and Custom and was quite surprised to find that Gene Winfield was a contemporary of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and is quite famous in his own right. Gene's shops have built such futuristic and recognizable vehicles as the Star Trek Shuttle, the "Blade Runner" car, and much, much more. What we saw, and photographed, was work in-progress.

For those new to the High Desert, there are many amazing things hidden out here, some even in plain sight, if you know what you are looking at. Two of our members found a Stanley Steamer (car) in a barn out in the desert. Several of us explored a small community being overrun by sand dunes. Keep your cameras handy, you never know what you'll see. And be sure to take some of those "roads less traveled."
