Why is security concerned with lens length?

The same thing is going on at the LA Auto Show? Doesn't surprise me any. Besides, there's plenty of other photo ops out there waiting for us.

Just to be clear, it wasn't the LA Auto Show. It was Staples. The Auto show was no problem taking pictures. There was no Security at the door. I was under the impression I could drive a tank in there and they wouldn't care.
Seems like they skimped a little on their setup this year. I seem to remember many more special effects but maybe it's just me.
One thing that kind of torqued my jaws was I accidently went in the wrong door and ended up going into Staples. Security made me throw away my soda that I just bought and almost booted me cuz my lens was too big. I guess they measure the length of the lens and anything over 3.5 inches is forbidden. I made it by 1 inch. Little did they know that I had my 28-300 which extends out to about 10 inches. I had the extension locked down which allowed me to "pull one over" on em, but it ended up being all in vain.
I had bought my ticket online so when I tried to check in afterwards, they told me I was in the wrong building. grrrrrrrrrrr.
I might ad at this point that I walked right into the Auto Show, no bag check, no taking my soda, nothing. Very weird.
$10 to get in and $15 to park. Wasn't sure which one was the event at that price.
Here's two that I managed to squeeze out. Top one was a 2 shot pano and the bottom was a 4. They look better enlarged.
Tomorrows the last day if you're going.
These were shot with a Tamron 28-300 TV/Canon 5D. (Not the new one
