Just north of Red Rock Canyon is an area on the west side of Hwy 14 that I call the "Badlands." This is some pretty rugged countryside so the morning sun casts high contrast shadows and morning colors. Because of the lay of the land I don't think evening shots would be good. But the strong reds of morning clouds would really be good. The downside is that I had to get up at 4:30 a.m. to get there and get set up.

When planning the trip I wasn't sure which compass direction the sun was going to come up so I looked around and found a web site with software that calculates all that for me. It's called "The Photographer's Ephemeris" and you can get it free from http://stephentrainor.com/tools. You just find your location, just like a Google map, and it tells you where the sun and moon will be. I've posted a selection of my photos in the LPA Member's Galleries. http://www.lpaphotography.org/mediagallery/album.php?aid=620&page=1

For folks like me who are nearly "i" illiterate Doug paid about $8.99 to put The Photographers Ephemeris on his iPhone/iPad so he can access the ephemeris information anytime rather than planning ahead (or wishing he had). Maybe I'll get that for Deborah's iPhone (mine is just a phone).
