A few years ago I wrote about a small area of sand dunes near Rosamond. By the next year they had been overrown with grasses. Then a group of us took a trip to Cantil, north of Cal. City, to a small community being overrun by sand dunes. I went by there today and much of those sand dunes are also now covered with grasses, though there are still plenty of interesting scenes. So, what happened?

I know that three years ago the rabbit population exploded around here and they ate all the grasses in our yard then started on the brush and everything else. They got so hungry that they were even eating the oleander leaves, which are poisonous. We live well out of town and lost six inches of soil in places due to wind erosion. Since then I've been discouraging the rabbits from spending time in our yard and the grasses and brush are again holding the ground. So, my guess is that both those areas suffered the same problem we had. But that means that the dunes may be back one of these years.

Interesting. I can imagine the grassy dunes being even more interesting than the sand, making the town look like it's really been taken over.
