This may be a little early but, for some folks, planning never starts too early. There may even be potential for a club field trip here. http://kern.audubon.org/festivals.htm
The Kern Valley & Kern River Preserve Nature Festivals begin April 29-May 5 with the Spring Nature Festival, http://www.audubon.org/local/sanctuary/kernriver/KRVSNFglance.htm, covering birds, butterflies, and flowers, and much more. They have many workshops including the two I attended last year on bird photography.
June 13 is the California Amphibian & Reptile Celebration.
As for events, there's a Beginning Bird Identification workshop on February 6 and 7, Butterfly count on April 25-26 and much more. http://kern.audubon.org/events.htm
