Julia and I went to the Ojai Pirate Faire Sunday http://www.goldcoastfestivals.com. This was their second and last weekend of the year but it's an annual event.
I've been to the big Rennaisance Faire and this differed in many ways besides the theme. Here it looked more like a convention of pirates because of the few outsiders and the many encampments. It looked like most of the pirates were actually camping in the traditional (or idealized) way. It was also much smaller.
For the few hours we were there, there was always something going on, from the parades to the belly dancers to the mock battle. The professionalism of the support people (parking lot attendants) was humorous but the pirates were, for the most part, very into their costumes and personnas.
Here are some photos I took with julia's P&S. I didn't take my DSLR because I thought it might be too much but there were more DSLRs than P&Ss among the visitors. Even some of the pirates were shooting with DLSRs.
Belly Dancer troupe encampment.
Pirates buying from pirates.
The walkway between some of the encampments and vendor's booths.
This pirate modeled his costume after (as I recall) Blackbeard's Gunner's Mate on National Geographic's "The Real Pirates."
