Hey folks..........

I picked up one of those Acer laptops like Bonnie recently got along with a San Disk Cruzer 16 gig memory stick. My question, does anyone know where I can pick up a no frills external cd drive so I can up load a few programs I want on the Acer's hard drive? Circuit City is going out of business and the shelves are near bare. Best Buy didn't have anything.

What software are you trying to install. I don’t know of many programs that require the use of a CD rom except for some games.
Just copy the files over to the thumb drive and install from that device.
It's also more cost effective to just get an external hard drive.
1TBs are going for around $100. CD roms hold about 700mb. Do the math.

I bought my daughter a 10" MSI wind netbook for Xmas. It also has no CD drive but I networked it to my desktop at home and loaded software from it's CD drive. You have to "share" the CD drive on the network. I bought the netbook from Amazon.com along with an additional 1 GB of memory.

As it turns out, I took the Acer back to Walmart then went to Best buy and bought a newer, more porwerful Dell desktop. My old HP was getting slow. Plus, I'm also picking up an external hard drive for picture storage. The new desktop has a 650GB hard drive. With 500GB more in the external (79.00 bucks), I should have enough.

Don,

I would have never suggested to buy the Acer as a main PC. I looked for months for this PC as I wanted to take it on trips with me to upload all photos. It has a 160 gig hard drive and I love the 9" LCD viewing. It is so much better than the 3" that I was looking at. I also use it to take the minutes etc. I am sorry if you misunderstood me but I do also have a desktop and laptop that I use. They each have their purpose for me and their own software. Glad you are nowhappy. BTW, I hope you are feeling better.

I know that you got your Acer for the light duty stuff. What I was looking for was something I could better manage my in-field photos with as well as being able to log in-field data via OpenOffice (I love their word processor). I need to be able to generate health reports in the event they are needed down the line. Plus, the Acer was the right size for my camera bags.

On the other side, the presentation at our last LPA meeting got me thinking about my computer and how slow it is when trying to photo edit. I want to try that high def stuff at the preserve but to download the program onto my slow HP would have been a waste of time. Instead, I opted to go for the new Dell (Studio XPS). Already, I see a major improvement in on board graphics (ATI Radeon 4850). I'm also happy with the processor up to this point so I plan on downloading the high def program soon and giving that end of photography a run for the money. That being said, a new desktop over an in-field laptop was the better overall choice.

Thanks. I do feel better. In two days, I see the doc to find out what they're gonna do next. How's your leg coming along, kiddo? Meet me out at the preserve and we can go jogging. LOL
