Can anyone identify this flower. I found it growing along 60th West near Ave A. It opens in the morning but closes sometime during the day.

Sue,

Thanks for replying. I looked up Desert Chicory and there are many similarities but also a few differences. The Desert Chicory has very similar petals and petal arrangements but the color is off and the Pistol/Stamen seem to be different. I suppose mine could be a variety of the Desert Chicory, or something different. While I found it growing wild along the roadside it could be a domestic plant started by seeds blown from someone's garden, though the nearest such garden would be nearly half a mile away.

Maybe I'll take a photo into a nursery and see if they know what it is. Thanks again.

I think it is a Chicory (Cichorium intybus) aka (Blue Sailors) and it is identified in Milt Starks book. In previous years, I've seen them growing in large (formerly wet) patches out in Leona Valley. Best known use as a coffee additive or substitute. His report says it's an alien... a garden escapee from Asia.
