I'm trying to understand why people like to look at pictures so that I can improve my composition and shot selection. So far I've come up with the following list but I would like to add to it. Of course, there are as many reasons as there are people but I'm hoping for some general categories that are not too complex.

1. To remember: People like to remember the good things, a wedding (but not mine), a location (like Hawaii), or just the old days (like Bodie).

2. To forget: Something to make them forget where they are or what they're doing. For example, a picture of a sailboat above their desk at work (as in, I wish I were there and not here).

3. To think: Something like and Escher or Salvador Dali that's unnatural or unusual or tells a story so they can spend time wondering about it.

4. To not think: Things like Windows screensavers or backgrounds that are peaceful, serene, but neither excite nor disturb.

5. To stimulate their visual cortex: Colorful flowers, locations, and scenery and interesting patterns (like stairways) and architectural oddities.

Thoughts?
