On May 21, 2024, Lancaster Photography Association will be having our last Themed Competition of the year - TRAINS. Entries may include trains and train-related subject matter. This is a pictorial competition, so any editing is allowed. Remember - No AI-generated images or parts of your image are allowed.

LPA members may enter up to three images for your $5.00 entry fee. Digital files must be sized 1400 high x 1280 wide pixels. You may pay online via Paypal, or bring $5.00 on the night of the competition.

On April 23, 2024, Lancaster Photography Association presents one our own, Tom Spanos, speaking about his concert photography adventures! The meeting is at 6:00 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Senior Center.

Tom will give a presentation about the joys, trauma, creative and technical aspects of music photography gained from 25+ years of casual and serious shooting.  He will establish a baseline with why music is of personal interest and the associated philosophy that create, discuss the technical aspects of hardware selection, camera settings,

and shooting positions.  He will also discussion the more creative flavor compositions, images of interest, and post processing.  He will give insight into what “clients” really want, along with good and bad experiences and how that leads to what data products to provide.  He will include one person’s perspective of where the evolving music photography environment is heading.

On April 16, 2024, Lancaster Photography Association is pleased to have Tim Meyer give a presentation about the essentials of portrait photography - lighting and posing. The meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. at the Antelope Valley Senior Center.

Ratios, pixels, chimping, metering, soft lights, hard lights, posing, lighting patterns...it can all be so confusing and overwhelming. To compete in today's photographic marketplace, professional photographers must be able to create a style and craftmaship that the average consumer cannot duplicate.

This presentation will focus on the fundamentals of quality lighting and posing, emphasizing the basic elements of studio and outdoor portraiture. With style as a consideration, Tim Meyer will illustrate how your choice of light-shaping tools, metering, ratios, facial and body analysis, and posing work together to produce dynamic results and consistently high quality images.

On March 19th, 2024, Lancaster Photography Association will be having a Photojournalism Competition at 6:00 p.m. at Antelope Valley Senior Center. We are looking forward to having Kevin Karzin join us as our judge for the evening! 

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY: MARCH 12, 2024 at 11:59 P.M.

All members are encouraged to enter their favorite Photojournalism photos, including sports photos! Competitions are a great way to get feedback on your images and to learn how to improve them from listening to the judge's comments throughout the competition.

This is a reality-based competition, so only minor (non-pixel-based) editing is allowed.

PHOTOJOURNALISM DEFINITION: 

Photojournalism entries shall consist of images with informative content and emotional impact, reflecting the human presence in our world. The journalistic (story-telling) value of the image shall receive priority over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, images that misrepresent the truth, such as those from events or activities specifically arranged for photography or of subjects directed or hired for photography, are not eligible.

Join us for an informative workshopAndrew will present techniques for capturing story telling images. We will discuss tactics and procedures used in the field, what to do with the images, and considerations for preparing for image competition/exhibitions.

Crystal Olguin will be our judge. She excels at creative photography and will be a wonderful judge!

CREATIVE DEFINITION: Creative is defined as altered reality that is apparent to the viewer. This definition includes alterations utilizing: Colored lights and gels, black light, Mylar, double exposures, projected images, camera or lens movement, lithograph, birefringence, and computer manipulation. The image should have strong composition, pleasing quality, and color, texture, pattern, and/or tone impact. The appropriateness of the technique selected and pictorial merit is considered in judging. Small amounts of manipulating images (changing opacity, using filters, adding text, fantasy or textured backgrounds, etc) is NOT considered Creative. The content is unrestricted.

Sizing: 1400 high x 1280 wide pixels

Entry Fee: $5.00 for up to 3 images.
