Join us on August 24th 2021 at 6:00 p.m. for a photo walk along Lancaster Blvd. Learning to take photos with purpose is a great skill to foster and helps us see things in ways we might not normally see them.

We will each pick a theme and work to capture photographs within that theme during the 1 to 1-1/2 hour stroll along the Boulevard. Suggested themes include People, Reflections, Macro, Signs, Abstract, Architecture, Vehicles, Movement, etc.

We will meet at the Round Steel Sculpture kitty-corner to MOAH at 6:00 p.m. and wander along the street from there to take our photos.  They will then be compiled for an article in the newsletter.

On August 17th , 2021 at 6:00 p.m., we are excited to announce we will be having a Zoom webinar about photographing Europe! As things start to open up slowly, some of you may be wanting to plan photography trips! Even trips closer to home will benefit from their helpful hints.

Travel with Jim and Magrit Nilsen, two award-winning photographers to some of their favorite locations in Europe. Jim and Magrit will present beautiful images from nine different locations in Italy, France, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Croatia. This presentation also includes photography tips for anybody who would like to create their own masterpieces.

Jim Nilsen is an award-winning photographer who specializes in travel and landscape photography.

For the past 10 years, Jim and his wife Magrit have been operating Photography Travel Tours (www.photographytraveltours.com), conducting photo tours and workshops in Europe. Destinations include the Cinque Terre, Tuscany, Venice, the Italian Dolomites, Provence, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, The Netherlands, and Portugal.

Magrit Baurecht Nilsen was born and raised in Austria. She is a photographer and graphic designer with a background in architecture.
Both Jim and Magrit feel passionate about color and composition in photography and love sharing beautiful destinations and photography techniques with their clients.

Jim and Magrit live in Edmonds in the beautiful Pacific NW just north of Seattle when they are not leading tours or researching new exciting photo destinations in Europe.

Join LPA on June 22 nd at 6:00 p.m, for Pete Scifres Zoom webinar presentation on Utah’s national parks.

The five National Parks that stretch across Southern Utah -- Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches -- are some of the crown jewels of the USA park system.  In this information packed webinar Pete Scifres will describe great locations; how to get there; when to be there; and how to photograph them.

On May 18th, at 6:00 p.m., Lancaster Photography is hosting a Macro/Close-up competition for its members. It is the last competition before the End of the Year competition.

All members can enter. The entry fee is only $5.00 and you may enter up to three images. If you came to our recent Macro/Close-up workshop, you definitely have images you can enter!

DEFINITION OF MACRO/CLOSE-UP: Photographs of small subjects or close up views of sections of large subjects. Think of this Class as “close up” to the subject. A photo of a faraway galaxy appears closer using a telescope, but it’s not a close-up image. A close-up on a face is good, but maybe better is a close up of an eye. This class is expecting some level of magnification.

Our judge is Robin Stern. Caught by the “photography bug” she joined two photography clubs in the Southern California Association of Camera Clubs: Photonaturalists and Poly Photo, and became active in both clubs and in SCACC. She is currently the SCACC Interclub Chair and secretary of Poly Photo Club.

Her first year entering the San Diego County Fair, she won two 4th Place Ribbons and went on from there to win first place ribbons in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, she also won Best of Show. In 2016., she won Interclub Image of the Year from SCACC and received an Honorable Mention for the same image in PSA Council Challenge last year.

The Lancaster Photography Association is happy to present this month’s General Meeting webinar with Jeff Leimbach. He is going to speak about What to Shoot When There is Nothing To Shoot. It is an ideas class by all accounts. This class is full of shooting ideas designed to get photographers out of a creative rut and back shooting. There are discussions on Self Assignments, Shooting on Spec, Places to Shoot, ways to shoot and more. This class is for everyone, regardless of skill level, camera brand or type.

Jeff is a professional photographer and graphic designer. He has served as moderator for Photoshop World, Photoshop Seminar Tour for KelbyOne, and the Canon in Action Tour for Canon Live Learning. Other workshop experience includes staff instructor for Moose Peterson’s Digital Landscape Workshops and owner of The Digital Photo Workshops. He also serves as a Canon Camera Product Educator and
Tech Rep.

On March 25 th , LPA members will be meeting up at Apollo Park to do some bird and close-up photography. Bring lenses that will capture airplanes, birds and nature! Apollo Park has a wide variety of birds that come through on migration and some that live there year-round.

We will be meeting at 12:30 at the far end of the parking lot and spend the first hour in the park. Then at 1:30, we will walk over to the Airplane Museum which is now used as a working classroom for the Aviation program at AVC. We will get to spend some time photographing the various airplanes that are in the Museum. Then you are free to return to Apollo Park for more bird watching or head on home!

This is our first field trip in a while, and it will be nice to see each other in person! Hope to see you there!

HUMAN INTEREST – Human Interest is defined as an image depicting a person or persons in an interactive, emotional or unusual situation, excluding recreational or organized sports action.

Guidelines for Human Interest Images

The journalistic (story-telling) value of the image shall receive priority over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, images that misrepresent the truth, such as those from events or activities specifically arranged for photography or of subjects directed or hired for photography, are not eligible. As with all reality-based divisions techniques that add, relocate, replace or remove any element of the
original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. The only allowable modifications are removal of dust, scratches or digital noise, restoration of the existing appearance of the original scene, sharpening that is not obvious, and complete conversion to grayscale monochrome. Other derivations, including infrared, are not eligible. All allowed adjustments must appear natural.

“Restoration of the appearance of the original scene” may include techniques such as HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning provided they do not alter the contents of the original scene and the result looks natural. Borders are optional, but must be 3 or 4 pixels in width and must be white or a shade of grey.

Kevin Karzin is a professional photographer from the Santa Clarita Valley, who has won numerous awards including PPC 2018 Photojournalism Photographer of the Year, 2018 Top Ten Photographer of California and 2018 Prime Image Collection, and PPA 2018 Western District Photography Competition – 2 merit awards. He has been president of SCVPA (Santa Clarita Valley Photography Association) since 2014.
