Hi all! This is Cheri Preciado, Jayda's grandma. Since Jayda did so well at fair it has been suggested she upgrade from her point and shoot. I am planning on giving her my Cannon Rebel with all the "stuff" I have to go with it. The problem is, it will leave me cameraless. <LOL> I am willing to spend a few dollars to get a new camera for myself. I generally shoot dog events (action) and landscape, but obviously need a camera that can do it all. Arley was kind enough to sign me up to this forum. For those of you who are more experienced than myself, I'd appreciate comments about the camera you use, and why you like/don't like it. Replies here, or if you prefer privately, would be greatly appreciated. I hope to buy my new camera soon. Thanks in advance. Cheri,

As I recall Jayda's camera was something more than a simple P&S and what she did with it is nothing less than fantastic. It's hard to beat success but if she wants to move up then I guess it's time.

I have the Canon EOS Rebel XT which is about three years old now. The latest, I think, is the XSi which has some very desirable features (over the XT) but I'm still learning and getting good results with my XT. I don't know which version you are giving her but I think it's a good camera.

That said, if Jayda is really serious then you might consider the long-term here. That is, either take back the Rebel and get her a D50, or equivelant, or let her keep the Rebel and you can get something that she can move up to in a year or two.

On the other hand, since she's switching brands anyway this might be a good time to consider Nikon (Canon users, please don't shoot me). I think that there are many more Canon users in the club than Nikon users so there may be more people who can answer Canon questions than Nikon questions. Deborah went to Canon because, at the time (14 years ago), we were told that Canon was more rugged than Nikon. I picked Canon because I found one in a yard sale for about 5% of it's original price. On the other hand, one day I didn't get my Rebel mounted on my tripod right and it fell on the concrete, lens first. The only damage was a slight ding to the UV filter (which I still use).

The real answer, of course, is whatever camera suits your needs best. These days they're all better than what we had even 5 years ago. At the AV Fair this year it was hard to tell the amateurs (and juniors) from the advanced amateurs and professionals, which tells me that it's more important to have a good eye and to know how to use what you have than it is to have the best equipment. Jayda's success tends to prove this out.

Cheri,

It all comes down to personal preference and how much you want to spend. If you are considering Nikon's I would look at the new D3000 for a couple of reasons. It is light weight and relatively inexpensive($600) and it uses all the Nikon lenses. Some lenses without an autofocus drive built in have to be manually focused. The D3000 has many of the features that are in the D80 and better software. Another alternative is the D40 that is older but cost less than $500. The thing to remember is that cameras become obsolete, while lenses last, so don't buy more camera than you need, save your money for lenses. If you want to spend more money the next cameras up would be the D90 and then the D700.
