"if Glenn would be so kind to let me know what kind of rules and regs we should abide by...or should it be a free for all???" Sharon

I suggest that we make this more interesting and go with the definition of "self portrait" that is in Wikipedia:

"A self-portrait may be a portrait of the artist, or a portrait included in a larger work, including a group portrait. Many painters are said to have included depictions of specific individuals, including themselves, in painting figures in religious or other types of composition not intended to depict the actual persons as themselves. Often these are just faces in a crowd, often at the corner of the work, but a particular hybrid genre developed where historical scenes were depicted using a number of actual persons as models, often including the artist, giving the work a double function as portrait and history painting."

This means that it can be of the individual's head, torso, full body, or the person in a group of people.

The photo must have been taken during the "challenge" period.

I suggest we have a two-day window when contestants post their pictures, following Arley's directions of no side over 600 pixels. They are to be posted on the forum under "Picture Critique" with the thread topic identifying that it is a challenge and the date of the challenge posting. Then everyone can log-in and comment/vote.

Or do you have some other suggested rules and regs?

Glenn

Going with your original two-weeks I guess we start today then this challenge would logically end at midnight on January 15th with the 16th and 17 as posting days.

Do you want to run this one through all the way before considering the next challenge?

Maybe we should run the challenge month to month, due to the lack of input from a large group of people..we may be the only ones in the challenge!! Maybe we should put it in the news section of our website here and see if there is a response..Arley did say they had a forum once before, but not alot of people were inputing things. It appears that there are more people viewing..than inputing...okay...I think we should run it month to month..and maybe the last week of each month people post their photos...what do you think...???

"Maybe we should run the challenge month to month," Sharon

I'll drink to that, but then I'll drink to anything. Big Grin

I had posted a notice yesterday in my discussion group notes for two weeks but it was linked to this thread so I don't think this change will bother anyone. So, looking at my calendar I guess we can call it posting January 25-31.

Yes, I had heard that there was a previous attempt at a forum which fizzled, but the internet culture has spread considerably even over the last few years so I'm hoping that this one will grow. Even my Friday Night Discussion Group has slowed down from it's peak but it's still strong with its core group and we still get newcomers on a fairly regular basis. I think it will all catch on and grow, albeit slowly.

Yes, it needs to be a one month challenge. So many of us (me included) enter photos for competition that we've taken over the last year, but need to give ourselves an "assignment/challenge" to grow. I feel like i already have one with the upcoming LPA "Close Up" competition, but welcome the challenge of both assignments.

I've seen much more interest/participation in the LPA forum now, vs what we had a couple years ago, and only think the interest will continue to grow. I think we have a lot of lurkers, and people who are hesitant to participate in the forum, and gallery. Do we need to have a workshop night on "Forums, Galleries, and getting Yourself/Photos On-Line"?

Maybe so Sue, I think there are some people who arent really sure about the ins and outs of using the forum, even with the help of Arley..so yes..we may need a workshop..and I think the forum can be alot of fun...if you have any challenge ideas...pls give us your input...I would like to see more participation here...it seems like the same chosen few are here on a regular basis...hum....

OK, I've got a question here (patience required, new member) related to either terms used or clarification. Below in this string you reference the January “Photo Challenge”, that being Self Portrait. I looked on the club calendar and it refers to a "Competition" for January with it being Close Ups. Please explain the difference between these two activities. Are they both due at the club meeting in January, and how does one enter and submit?
Thanks!

No , no the Photo challenge is for this forum only, it has nothing to do with the meeting..one is a challenge and the other a competition..the photo challenge is for fun,,gives us something to do between meetings to sharpen our skills, discover our unique talents..so please join in on the fun..no ribbons or awards will be presented at the end of the challenges..just our lovely comments to one another...and of course some warm welcomed critiques...

"how does one enter and submit?" blindeye

At the risk of repeating Sharon, these are two separate and distinct activities which have nothing to do with each other beyond that we're all members of the LPA. For the club competition see the LPA Web Site and "Competition Rules" at http://www.lpaphotography.org/CompetitionRules/index.html.

As for this forum's "Challenge" just read the above postings for the "rules." Actually this is just the first challenge and so we're making up the rules as we go along which means that they're less like "rules" and more like guidelines. And, since there are no designated judges, no winning or losing, no prizes, or any of that, it's more of a "you show me your's and I'll show you mine" kind of activity. Surprised!

Your avatar would make a good self-portrait if you took it yourself. I plan on doing something different, if I can put it together in time. Feel free to be as creative and/or conventional as you like. It's all just for fun and practice.

Glenn,
Thanks for the response. I’ll come up with something to post for the challenge. The avatar posted was just me playing around in the garage before the beard departed. Besides, that image is a couple of months old. Needs to be current work right? After all isn’t that the intent, to keep everyone engaged in new work...

Yes, our "rules" are that the photo needs to be taken within the challenge window.

First, the story. Originally I wanted to do a group photo with me as the only one looking at the camera, something like the figure at the right in Botecelli's "Adoration of the Magi"
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9d/Sandro_Botticelli_085.jpg or, more simply, something like Gustave Courbet's "Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet,"
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gustave_Courbet_010.jpg, which I probably should have done yesterday on our visit to Red Rock Canyon. But didn't think of it.

As I was running out of time I was reading about a streaker at the Australian Tennis Open and decided to do a little flashing of my own.

Now, the technique. I have a Canon EOS Rebel XT with a Canon 580EX flash. I had no idea what all this flash would do but I tried both the "Flash on Second Curtain" and "Strobe" functions. The strobe seemed to be easier to master so I went with that. I tinkered with various settings on my porch until I could see myself several times. I finally settled on three flashes set one second apart and a 3.2 second exposure (the camera wouldn't do 3.0), aperture of 14, ISO 400, and focal length of 39 mm on my 18-55 mm kit lens. The White Balance was still set (incorrectly) at "Cloudy" from the day's shooting, but I liked the effect. On the porch there was too much background so I moved outdoors. Even then I got the Rosamond lights and other yard objects so I lowered the tripod and pointed the camera up at an angle to miss all that. I was wearing a black t-shirt which I Photoshopped out. To get three images I just tilted my head to each position as the three flashes went off. I then Photoshopped (played) it in Raw until I got something more interesting than the original.

I'll never be an Arley, but thinking about this for the last three weeks and the time getting to know my flash were very instructional and fun. What's the next challenge?
