Upon Bonnie's suggestion at last Friday night's discussion group meeting, I wanted to put together a brief newsletter editorial on my recent trip to the mountians of North/South Carolina, and Virginia, complete with 6 or 8 pictures.

With the pictures loaded into PSE 7, I made a picture CD, that is now on its way back to NC, of that trip. Going back to select the shots I wanted to forward to Dave, PSE 7 shows me those pictures but says it can't find the file which halts me in my tracks. I went back to my Windows Picture file and that folder is empty. ????? After a simple, everyday picture upload? What gives here?

If the folder is empty, how is it that PSE 7 is showing me those trip pictures and why can't I then access them? If PSE 7 can show them to me, they have to be somewhere on my computer.

Common sense tells me that after my photo op partners back east load up that CD for them to send it back to me so I can re-load. But, again, why is PSE 7 showing me what I can't get to?

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't use PSE 7 but I suspect you're seeing a reference to the missing pictures, not the actual pictures. Some programs do that. They create a thumbnail and use that instead of the actual picture. It speeds things up.

I fear that you are dead on spot, Arley. It's gonna be a matter of waiting for that picture CD to get back to me so I can upload again. What a pain.

you could try to find your files by

1. If you are using a newer o/s go to the start button (lower left corner of your comp ) when the window pops up at the bottom of this new window is a search box put in the photo number with the extension ( .jpeg etc ) and see if it can show you where they are. or

2. You can try reloading the originals or anything for that matter off your card like regular download and a window with a file extension should show up and show you where the files are going.

3. If you are on a mac use the Finder by putting in the number of your picture with the file ex. on it and the finder will show you where it is putting them.

4. I have an old version of pse so this may not work you can select a picture by just clicking on it to highlight in the catalog part then go to the the under Window down to properties and at the botton it will show you where the files is
c:\ etc then you can go to that file and see them.

hope you find them

I think what may have happened is that as I uploaded those trip pictures to CD, the root Windows Picture file was cleaned out. I used PSE 7's CD format so I'm under the belief that PSE 7 is responsible for clearing out the Widnows Picture file and transfering all of its contents to that CD. My first time using PSE's CD format, it may well be that I simply have a config issue going on. I've never had this happen before, loading to CD via Windows Pictures as a stand alone.

You live and learn.

Thanks for all of your input.

If its a big deal, I would look at some recovery software. If the files were deleted there's a chance you can get them back either off the card or the drive by just un-deleting them. The longer you wait on this, the harder it's going to be to get them back. There are lots of software that do this. I use "R-Studio" and Digital Image Recovery" but like I say, recovery software is a dime a dozen.
I'm going to assume you've already looked in the recycle bin.
I would also suspect that the slide show images (if that is what it is) were downsized so you may not be able to recover the full sized images, but maybe not, it depends on how you created it.
and, like previously stated, they may have been moved to another location by PSE and you just didn't realize it. I would go through the process again and watch very carefully what PSE is doing. You just might see a check mark (set by default) that moved the files to a central area. Worth a shot!
