This morning I saw lots of clouds toward Tehachapi and decided to try for some fog photos. After dropping Julia off at school I continued North and took Tehachapi-Willow Springs road. My first stop was about a half-mile before the entrance to Cameron Canyon Rd. From there (a short walk up the hillside) I could see many windmills, a herd of horses, and lots of fog. My second stop was at the entrance to Cameron Canyon Rd. where I took some shots of more windmills, none of which made it into this blog. After that I drove into the fog and was rewarded with several interesting shots.

Attempt at a split image, half near-trees, half far-trees. This was inspired by my recent viewing of photos by Pat O'Hara.

Your spur of the moment trip certainly paid off. Your reward... that barn in the fog. What a great photo!

Sharon,

There are two ways to get there from the AV. The easiest is probably to go through Mojave toward Tehachapi. About 5-6 miles after you turn onto Hwy 58 you should see an overpass with a sign saying "Cameron Road." This exit takes you onto Cameron Canyon Road and nowhere else so you can't get lost. At the other end of Cameron Canyon Rd you can take a right to Tehachapi or left to Willow Springs (Rosamond, Lancaster, etc).

The barn is roughly 2 miles from the freeway and on the left. It's only about 15 yards off the road and very easy to see.

During most of the year it's pretty brown in there but right now there's lots of green. The only thing I would like to have done is to move the barrel inside the barn to get it out of view. I took 26 photos of the barn from different angles and inside. The whole thing is on a slope and I was standing on a high spot handholding the camera (in the fog I didn't think sharpness would be too much of an issue). Inside the barn I would liked to have had my tripod because the exposure time was too long for handholding.

My camera was a Canon EOS Rebel XT (about 3 years old). My lens was the kit lens, 18-55. My settings were:

Av
ISO 400
f 14
Shutter 1/50th second (it was kind of dark in the heavy fog)
JPG only
I used Photoshop CS3 and various adjustments including Selective Color to bring up the green a little.

I really enjoyed this short trip and am happy with the results. This morning it looked like the snow level had dropped enough that there was probably a light dusting of sow on the barn. That would have made a nice photo but I would have had to get up before dawn to get there before it melted off.
