The Bishop fall colors should be on full display this time of year around Bishop and the surrounding areas. There are many hotels, restaurants, and places stay and shop in Bishop. There is also a Casino and several Campgrounds in the town of Bishop.

If you plan on going please sign up below and set up your own personal lodging accommodations. We will be following all state social distancing guidelines. Please bring your own masks and hand sanitizer.

We will all meet at the Carl's Jr. in Bishop at 1:00 PM on Friday October the 16th. After meeting up, we will be heading out to Lake Sabrina and other lakes in that area looking for fall colors. We will be meeting back at a restaurant in Bishop at 6:45 PM to talk about our exciting day. We will make sure to find a restaurant with outdoor seating. Paiute Casino does have an outdoor eating area. Meals start from 5 dollars.

Kevin Loughlin, owner of Wildside Nature Tours, has led 39 tours to the Galapagos Islands as of 2019. This destination is truly one of his favorite places in the world and going back time and again only reinforces that love and desire to return.

As Kevin shares some of his many images made during his many trips to the Galapagos, Kevin will discuss the many aspects of Galapagos history, geology and, of course, the amazing wildlife to be seen and enjoyed!

Kevin's most recent projects include working with author John Kricher to completely rewrite John's book, "Galapagos a Natural History," published by Smithsonian in 2000 and reprinted a few years later by Princeton Press. With Princeton Press, Kevin and John will be updating the text as well as recreating the book in full-color using Kevin's images.

Welcome to our first competition of the 2020-2021 year, Zoom style! We are having an Abstract Competition on July 21, 2020. All LPA members are eligible to participate in our 5 competitions throughout the year. You may enter 3 photographs for a $5.00 entry fee. Currently we are only accepting digital entries, because the judging will be done remotely via a Zoom meeting - see link below.

The definition of Abstract: Images in which the presentation of shape or form is the objective of the photograph. Abstract is often determined by not knowing what an object is, at least right away. For example, lines and shapes might be what you first saw, but then after studying the image, you notice that those lines and shapes are the outside of a building. If you saw it as a building first, without much thought, it may be better suited for the Structures Class.

Both Color and B&W images are acceptable.

All club members are invited to sign up below for field trip to the Devil's Punchbowl on Saturday July 18th at 6:00 PM- The Devil's Punchbowl is Located near the town of Pearblossom. The trip to the Devil's Punchbowl takes about 43 minutes from Lancaster.

Steve will be leading the Field Trip at the Devil's Punchbowl. We will all meet at the Ranger Station Located right next to the parking lot for a group photo and then explore. It will be warm at the start of the trip but will be cooling off as we go since it is located next to the Mountains. The elevation at the Devil's Punchbowl is 4,750 feet elevation. Please bring Hat and Sunscreen and water. We will be going on a short self-guided walking trail located behind the Ranger Station.

After this short hike we will be moving down towards the lower trail that goes all the way to the tilted sandstone Punchbowl Rocks and if we have time might go a little way down the trail that leads towards the bottom of the Punchbowl.  The lower trail to the rocks is more strenuous but is not too hard if you take your time back up.  Look forward to seeing you at this Field Trip.

The best time to get the Golden light is about 30 to 45 minutes before the sun goes down. We are hoping for a great sunset as well, so we can get some great colors too!

All social distancing on this field trip will be followed as mandated by the state. Bring hand sanitizer.

What great entries you all had for our Wildflowers/Desert Scenes Competition! Hutch said he had a hard time choosing winners in the Divisions with more entries. Kudos to everyone who entered!

Our judge, Hutch Hutchison, spent a while going through all the images and writing helpful comments on each one. He included crop suggestions if needed as well.

Each Division has its own gallery. Just click on the Icon for each Division and the gallery will open. Winners are at the beginning of each gallery with their name and image title. The judge may reference a suggested crop, which can be seen by selecting “View Comments” at the upper
right or below the comments. (Caution: There is a bug in the software that will cause the “View Comments” page to sometimes show as shaded and prevent the user from proceeding any further. Use the browser’s refresh button to restore proper function. On May 19, 2020, LPA is excited to hold our Wildflowers/Desert Scenes competition with Hutch Hutchison judging our images. Due to the current distancing guidelines, we will not be meeting in person, but we will enter our images on the LPA website as usual and they will be sent to Hutch for judging. This time we will have a way you can look at the images online along with Hutch’s comments.

The link will be sent out via email as soon as the judging results are available. The deadline for this competition is Friday, May 15 th at 11:59 p.m. Please enter your three images in the digital section, since we will not be able to accommodate prints for this competition.

The definition of the Wildflowers Class is: Close-ups and landscapes dominated by desert wildflowers.

The definition of the Desert Scenes Class is: Scenes depicting the environment, plants, animals and birds
of the southwestern deserts.

All members are welcome and are encouraged to participate in our competitions, as this is a way to gauge how you are progressing in your photography by having a neutral judge look at your images and give constructive feedback. Our judge this time, Hutch Hutchison, is an accomplished, award-winning photographer and his feedback will be very helpful! He has judged and presented programs for various clubs around Southern California for many years. We had a wonderful wildflower season this year, and you all should be able to enter some great photos!

On March 17, 2020, Lancaster Photography Association will be holding our fourth competition of the 2019-2020 Competition season. Our Competition Theme is “Open”. This means you can enter a photograph with any subject matter (in good taste). Color and Black and White images are both acceptable. If you have fair prints that you love, now is the time to enter prints!

Members may enter up to 3 images for the entry fee of $5.00. Please remember, if you are entering prints, you still need to upload your digital images, so that they can be displayed during judging. Click here to enter.

Our judge for this competition is Paul Speaker. Paul has been interested in photography since childhood, when he began with roll film and a box Brownie. After active duty in the US Navy, he attended Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree with a double major in Industrial Photography and Color Technology. Shortly thereafter, he was hired by General Dynamics Corp, where he worked as an industrial photographer and color printer for 10 years. When the facility was sold and moved, he switched to Lifetouch, a school photography company, where, for 10 years he photographed classroom groups from 6 to 600 students, dances, seniors, and sports. He had his first Photoshop class in January, 2000, and, by April was hired as a full-time retoucher for a local full-service portrait studio. Currently, he is semi-retired, accepting assignments if they interest him, but mostly doing Photoshop work for other photographers.
 

On February 18 th , 2020, Lancaster Photography Association is pleased to have Bob Driver, Michael Jackson, and our own Tom Spanos give a presentation on Airshow Photography. They do a great job covering airshows and will have a lot of great information to share with us, as well as some great images to show us.

We have two air shows in the Antelope Valley this year – the LA County Air Show at Fox Field on March 21-22 featuring the US Navy Blue Angels, and another LA County Air Show at Edwards Air Force Base on October 10-11 featuring the US Air Force Thunderbirds. This will be a great opportunity to prepare for the upcoming shows.
