Lancaster Corporate Challenge Looking for Photographers

Archives

The City of Lancaster is hosting is first Annual Lancaster Corporate Challenge (LCC) beginning

Saturday, April 6, 2013 through Saturday, June 22, 2013.  This is a great way to get experience in action, human interest, and photo journalism photography.  Shoot the action or shoot the by-standers!

The City is looking for photographers to shoot at the various sporting events. All photographs will be provided to the City of Lancaster on CD/DVD media with the photographer’s name. The photographer retains ownership of all photos but provides the City an unlimited license to use the photographs in City publications with credit to the photographer. The photographer provides his or her services on a volunteer basis.

More information about the Lancaster Corporate Challenge is available on the City’s website at www.cityoflancasterca.org/LCC.  If you are interested in providing photography services at one or more event, please sign up below.  Those interested will be sent additional information on the City’s volunteer service process.

Field Trip: Bolsa Chica Wetlands, April 28

Archives

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is located at 3842 Warner Ave, Huntington Beach, California (map). The drive is just under 2 hour drive from Lancaster.  Please plan to arrive around 11AM.  I would like to meet up at 11:15AM for a group photo at or near the center.  Departure time is up to you.

This is a vast place to walk.  Take in the mostly flat wetlands, where countless waterfowl make their home or stop to rest & feed before traveling again on their migratory path. Bordered on one side by Pacific Coast Highway and oil fields and houses on the other, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a 300 acre coastal sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds. There's a wooden bridge crossing over a tidal inlet and a 5-mile loop trail providing spectacular wildlife viewing.

I am told that there are two main locations for photography.  You can stop at the Bolsa Chica Interpretive Center, located on Warner Avenue, just east of Pacific Coast Highway, to learn about the birds in the area and to take the short pathway that leads you along Outer Bolsa Bay.  Most photographers tend to gravitate to the boardwalk and the observation trails that begin at the Inner Bolsa Bay, which is located on Pacific Coast Highway, south of Warner Avenue.  The first location is good for information and overviews; the second is better for photography.

Please sign up below if you'd like to attend.

Presented by Tom Gamache and Van Webster, 6:00pm April 23, 2013 at the AV Senior Center

After more than 40 years as a professional photographer workshop co-director Tom Gamache’s name has become synonymous with discriminating natural and cultural landscape photography. His company, Wandering Around Outdoors (WAO), was named for his road trip adventures, often covering many thousands of miles monthly by discovering, rediscovering, and resolving his experiences into images that capture the art, the power, and the ever-changing personality of nature. His work appears in many books and magazines as well as interpretive displays at visitor centers.

2013 California Poppy Festival - April 20-21, 2013

April 20-21 – Lancaster City Park

http://www.poppyfestival.com

LPA’s 9th Year of Participation!

The LPA will be participating in the 2013 Poppy Festival, in the Fine Arts Division, for the 9th year in a row. Participation has always been great, attendance high, and we always pick up new members during the event. It’s a great opportunity to be involved in a fun community service project, to provide educational handouts on “How to Take Great Poppy Photos”, an opportunity to promote the LPA, and an opportunity to learn how to display/sell your work.  Plus… it’s a wonderful opportunity to hang out with other photo club members and talk PHOTOGRAPHY!

Please consider signing up on the LPA website to work a shift. New members are encouraged to participate. All Sat/Sun volunteers receive a free pass to the festival (up to an $8 value).

All LPA members are invited to submit "framed/under glass/ready to hang" photos (up to 3) for display (or for sale). Full wrapped canvas photos are ok too. The larger the photo, the more eye catching it will be. Smaller items such as matted prints, and greeting cards sell well. All sellers need to agree to:

  • 20% of all sales will be withheld for “donation” to LPA
  • No checks.  Cash or Credit Card only
  • Release of Liability

All photos/supplies need to be dropped off at booth on Friday, April 19th between 4:00pm and 7:00pm.  This is the same time period that we will need help with take in, getting our booth ready and getting photos hung. Please sign up below if you'd like to sell items, and indicate what you'll be selling.

If you have any additional questions, please contact your chairperson Sue Craft sue@suecraftphotography.com  or co-chair Scott Shackelford s.m.shackelford2@gmail.com. If you want to sell and need guidance in preparing and pricing items, contact Tylene Trout at mtrout1@aol.com.

Workshop: Beyond Composition with Rob Sheppard, March 26

Archives

Beyond the Average – Gaining Impact Through Composition

Everybody talks about composition, but what is most composition? The rule of thirds at best and ineffective centered compositions at worst. Composition can be so much more. It can grab a viewer and communicate something about the world in a way that is unique to you. This does not mean ignoring things like the rule of thirds, but it does mean going beyond a prison that limits one to the rule of thirds. Rob Sheppard will be talking about how you can use composition more effectively, more dramatically and more decisively to create unique images that truly connect you with your viewer.

The workshop starts at 6:00pm, March 26, 2013 at the AV Senior Center at 777 W. Jackman Av., Lancaster.

Join Rob and fellow LPA members for an early no-host dinner at Greenhouse Café in Lancaster at 4:30pm.

Revamping Photos at Saddleback Park

Archives

- WELCOME - to our project of “revamping” the photographs inside of the visitor center at Saddleback Butte State Park !!!

We’ve been given permission to do away with the old dingy photos, and bring in the new !!!

- PLEASE - help out by contributing your best photos that were taken in the park. Seasonal shots of the park will be great : winter with snow , spring with wildflowers, etc...Night shots, star trails , sun & moonrises as well. Since there’ll be an abundance of “scenic” shots to choose from, what is also very much needed are more wildlife, and native plant images. If you have any great shots of a rattlesnake, owl, scorpion, tarantula, rabbit, coyote, tortoise, or other desert critters that are great, but not taken at the park, please do send those too.
