Anything's possible. We did that trip in 2006 and everyone came back with some great pictures.

It would just take a trip leader to commit. Sue, Kay and Tylene may qualify since they led the last one and have the experience in dealing with the rangers.

After seeing Arley's way cool B/W photo taken at Bodie... I want to go again! I can't commit to leading another field trip at this point in time (lot's of other stuff going on) but if anyone would like to be the official "trip leader" would be happy to pass along all my contact information, notes, etc... I have contact info, a trip itenerary/schedule, the name/contact info for our VERY HELPFUL/KNOWLEDGEABLE/WAY COOL ranger, and all the info needed to secure the required insurance. Contact me if you're interested, and I'd be happy to pass along all the info that I needed to make the trip happen. Sue Craft

Oh come on now, Arley....it was just a suggestion. I can only imagine the work that goes into planning a trip like that. Is September the best time to go? Well hopefully we will be able to go next year...

Ya know, you might want to check out Ransburg if you're looking for something close by and similar. There's a lot of potential there for that kind of photography. It's an old mining town and is still occupied but there are a lot of abandoned building there. All you would need is a horse and you would be in the twilight zone.

I have a couple other pictures in the Gallery.

I might add that the field trip we have planned in March has a few ghost towns in the area not far from where we will be. After I do some more research, I may head over there if I find it worth the drive.
If you go to the Field trip webpage and download the PDF Map, look at the middle of the page and you will see at least two by stove pipe wells.

Here's the Link

Randsburg gets most of the attention but there are three old mining towns in that area. Johannesburg and Red Mountain are also interesting. I haven't been to them in many years but many of the old mining houses and buildings are still standing. Red Mountain may still have it's old-west restaurant and museum. Also, Northeast of Red Mountain is Steam Wells with it's own odd history and nearby petroglyphs.

West of Randsburg is the Rocket Research Society's Mojave Test Area (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.rrs.org/main.1.0/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=50&amp;Itemid=76">http://www.rrs.org/main.1.0/index.php?o ... &amp;Itemid=76</a><!-- m -->Wink, the ghost town of Garlock, Burro Schmidt's Tunnel, and many other sites of interest.

East of Red Mountain is the modern ghost town of Lockhart with a nearby lake and wildlife sanctuary.

It's truly amazing what's out there.

Glenn, how many of these ghost town do you think you could squeeze into a day? Are they in close proximity? I just drove 2 hours from las vegas to beatty nevada to visit rhyolite, we were in and out in about an 1 1/2 hours..So I am wondering if you can see two or three in one day..Randsburg is the biggest one right??

Sharon, Randsburg, Johannesburg, and Red Mountain are about 5-10 minutes apart. Steam Well is about 20 minutes from Red Mountain, as I recall, though it's been so long it may take another 1/2 hour to find the petroglyphs if we don't find anyone in the area to give us directions.

Garlock is about 15 minutes the other direction from Randsburg and the Rocket site is about 30 minutes from there, though it's hard to know when there will be any activity there. It does look like they're scheduling a launch day for January 24th [url][http://www.rrs.org/main.1.0/index.php?option=com_mmsblog&amp;task=show&amp;id=11/url].
