Moorpark Civil War Battle Reenactment, Nov 10 2013

Archives

Led by David and Christine Wilkins

The Moorpark Rotary Club presents the largest and grandest Civil War event in Southern California and the largest battle reenactment West of the Mississippi.  Chris and I went last year and had a grand time.   There are two battles scheduled for Sunday the 10th  of November.  The re-enactors set up a Union camp and a Confederate camp.  The camps are set up to reflect the period and are good opportunities for individual portraits of the re-enactors.  An artillery battalion had a cannon duel, with all the smoke and fire.   Ground charges add to the realism.

It’s a 2 for 1 trip… fall color near Bishop and star trails over Mono Lake.  If history repeats itself, the first weekend in October should be great for fall color! This same weekend is the New Moon, which means no visible moon at night, which is ideal for photographing star trails over Mono Lake.

Tentative Schedule – All subject to change due to fall color and weather conditions, so you need to be flexible.

Sept. 24 Workshop: You Be The Judge

Archives

On September 24th, 6pm at the Senior Center, we’re having a special workshop where our LPA members get to do photo critiques.  The “bad” images will be supplied by our board members who do occasionally take less than perfect photos☺.

Don’t worry.  Your comments and suggestions are strictly voluntary.  No pressure, just a learning opportunity for everyone.

You can hone your photo critique skills as we show images that are flawed. It could be composition, exposure, lighting, etc. etc.

How could the flawed image have been taken better at the beginning? How could the image be fixed in post processing? We’ll even discuss the best way to do a photo critique.

Here’s an image on which you can practice.  If your friend asked you to critique this image, what would you say? How would you say it?

See you there.

General Meeting, Food Photography, August 20 at 6:00pm

Presented by Ed ouellette, 6:00pm at the AV Senior Center.

Ed graduated Brooks Institute in the mid 70s and went to LA to find work as an assistant. He was lucky enough to find work with a high level photographer and stayed with that studio for a few years. Eventually he got enough of his own work and opened his own studio in LA. It was a busy time with some fashion as well as clients from the automobile industry.

The career moved from one thing to another and eventually to food photography. A connection with a Food stylist led to work for Richard Simmons and his early Deal a Meal recipe books. Another Food stylist linked him to Sandra Lee from the Food Network. That work continues today.

He moved his family and studio to Valencia in the early 90s and found a new area of work with the Aerospace Industry and other Industrial clients.

Ed never hesitates to offer his knowledge of photography. Come hear him talk about a favorite subject, food photography. Learn some very interesting and simple methods to create appetizing images.

Afternoon and Sunset photos at El Matador Beach, June 23

Archives

Sunday, June 23, 2013, led by Douglas Wade 661 972-2201

UPDATE: If you are interested, we can meet at Neptune Net Restaurant 42505 Pacific Coast Hwy Malibu, CA 90265 for a late lunch at 1:30ish. From there we can carpool to El Matador. The restaurant is 5.5 miles northwest up on PCH.

Time 3:30pm to slightly after sunset. Meet as a group at the base of the stairs at 4:00pm

32215 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu

With the summer heat in the Antelope Valley it is time to head to the beach. Near the Malibu area is a little tucked away beach called El Matador State Beach. Parking is $8 and the walk is on a steep dirt trail including some stairs, and it is worth it. The view from the upper cliff is incredible as you look down on large rock formations, surrounded by with deep blue water and visible kelp forests.

There is plenty to photograph, and sunsets are outstanding. When shooting into the sunset, the camera will underexpose the scene (due to the bright sun), and you will lose detail in the image. Try shooting sunsets by bracketing your exposures.  Since most everyone shoots digital, we can take many exposures at no additional cost.  Set your exposure bracketing to take multiple shots at +2, +1, 0, -1, and -2.   Even if you’re not intending to combine the images into an HDR shot, you will be able to have a choice in choosing which one image has the most appeal to you.  It may surprise you that the -2 underexposed image ends up being a striking image.  It is a perfect time to experiment with your camera.
